well it's all rooted in the same source; conglomeration and corporate power. I'd argue though that since the media is responsible for the majority of the flow in information to the American public, if the media was independant and able to expose and discuss issues like this, you'd see change in the electoral, environmental, foreign policy etc. attitudes and demands.
