Default If Obama wins, should we change affirmative action?

If Obama becomes President, blacks will have reached the top job in the
country.

Why should we continue affirmative action as it is today?

I don't have a problem with affirmative action, I just believe it should not
be based on race. If you serve time in the military, you should receive
the benefits of affirmative action.

The current system would benefit Obama's daughters, but discriminates against a poor white boy.

If affirmative action benefits went to people who served in the military,
race and gender would be off the table. All people would be treated
equally.

Before we can start an intelligent discussion about Affirmative Action. What is your understanding or definition of Affirmative Action?

HA!....

they come and go....

I guess you COULD argue that a black man being elected as the president COULD mean that african americans are now square with slavery. I'd call that racist, and would add that the judgement of people by the color of their skin is not tolerated. All races need equal rights, and a fair shake. As long as racism exists, we should live in this country with some kind of rules on how some of us still view skin color and its relation to our equality.

Moving the intelligent discussion...

If you agree that affirmative action should be wiped out. Do you think we should also take away Naive American casinos?

Republican Charles Curtis was a quarter Kaw Indian, and vice president to Herbert Hoover during 1929-1933.

I'm having trouble understanding your post Holy. Um, it's racist to say what? This is another example of the word "racist" being watered down in this forum.

The bolded:
So you're saying that judgement of people by their skin color isn't to be tolerated, when that is exactly what Affirmative Action does. It looks at someone who's a specific color, and awards, or denies said person because of it. Mind you, I support AA, but I see it for what it is, which is a discriminatory policy.

It will be very interesting to hear how blacks have little chance in this country while one is the sitting President. Very interesting indeed. I doubt many will see it that way, though. I think most will think this will be a chance for MORE affirmative action as they have one of their guys in now.

I'm saying that ass long as there is racism, there needs to be affirmative action. Even if the president is black, that doesn't mean he is EVERY black man. eliminating laws that provide a fair shake in a racist land is bad for now. Want the affirmatiove action laws gone? Quit being racist (not you...people)

That's ridiculous. So then as long as there is terrorism we should have the Patriot Act, preemtive war, Gitmo, etc. As long as there is cocaine sold in the streets, we should have the war on drugs. That line of thinking is ridiculous because you can never completely eradicate certain types of behavior. Also, what some people view to be racist, especially in here, isn't. So who decides when racism doesn't exist anymore? I support AA, but let's not be unrealistic about it.

I do think we need to start moving away from affirmative action. I believe that if Obama gets elected it would show that America is now ready to turn the page. And that the laws against discrimination should be enough. I think this is necessary in order for all of us as Nation to move forward.

You have to think that we can't keep it forever. It would be a disservice to the people it is trying to help, by making them feel that country they call home is still so racist that the government must safe guard them. We should at least try to move away from it. I think even the people who are against Affirmative Action are against injustice and would not allow for people to be discriminated against once it is removed.
