Well, we hear a lot about "Maverick" these days. It seems the idea is that somebody who works through rules, regulations, or any type of appropriate behavior is just "in the way" of such a character. It's appealing to the American psyche.

So, let's get an idea of what a "Maverick" might do in office, by taking a look at a role model...

Maverick buzzes his own tower:
YouTube - Top Gun-First Practice Mission

Maverick "The One"... on foreign relations:
YouTube - Top Gun - Maverick on MiGs

Maverick on expediting reform in Washington?:
YouTube - Top Gun "need for speed" scene

Of course, we should mention that when Tom Cruise does Mavericky things in movies, they turn out right... after all, they're movies. Cruise does not crash four or five aircraft. If he "suspends his fighter pilot career" for something ultimately more important, it will turn out that he did it for a reason and will succeed brilliantly. That's why he's a movie character.

We like risk takers. We think they have balls. The reason not everybody takes every risk, however, is that risks have downside. That's why they're called risks.

So we like people who have a sort of uncanny instinct that allows them to take risks, redefining dramatic events by their sheer willingness to "just try" x, y, or z. The trouble is, we only like guys who are good at it.

Something tells me that McCain is not that guy.

It may just be me, but hearing Palin say the word Maverick over & over makes me nauseous.

"John McCain is a maverick....you betcha!"

I agree with your opinion that John (my daddy saved my arse) McCain isn't the guy who would make a good maverick.

But it makes me feel all mavericky!!!!

Never understood how a maverick can vote the bush agenda 90% of the time, doesn't sound like a maverick to me.. just another sheeple.

A Maverick is someone who takes risks but is good at it and has a history of luck or amazing results.

McCain was bottom of his class in the military, lost multiple planes in not much flight time, and really hasn't had much success in most of his projects.

It's a shame that Romney or Ron Paul didn't get the nomination, they are 10x more competent than McCain is.
