A Maverick is someone who takes risks but is good at it and has a history of luck or amazing results.
McCain was bottom of his class in the military, lost multiple planes in not much flight time, and really hasn't had much success in most of his projects.
It's a shame that Romney or Ron Paul didn't get the nomination, they are 10x more competent than McCain is.
From the Mav himself!!

I think I exhibited way too many McCain-like traits to make it in the military myself. Fortunately, I understood that following orders and living a regimented life wasn't my thing. I did come to understand that often rules are there for a reason, and everybody else was not, in fact, a jackass, following "silly little rules" that did not apply to me.
You know, like the rest of the U.S. Congress, in McCain's evident view, during the recent financial crisis. By gum, they could get the bill passed, if a Maverick just showed up to show them the way!!! (...er, adding political cover for a few house Republicans who didn't want to vote for it in the first place...)
Presto! nearly 2 weeks of grandstanding and $110 billion of "sweeteners" later, after irreperable further damage had been done, we had our bill.
I'm sure glad Maverick was there to put a mavericky hold on his campaign, proclaim the other guy to be playing politics, and uh, oh yeah that's right, hold up the political process by a couple of weeks.
How are you going to make every political issue all about being a "maverick", when in fact the gear need to turn, the votes need to happen, and nothing is about your own personal oppositional defiant disorder?
Some of the guys I've worked with have said he is the worst kind of guy to serve with, putting you in danger because he thinks he's special and different.
But I guess that's second-hand chatter from other military guys, and does not count
Once again, use your brain: Some guys in the military like McCain. More do not.
