When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up and how they walked twenty-five miles to school every morning , uphill and barefoot no less. Both ways!!

Yadda, yadda, yadda

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that I just can't help but look around and notice the youth of today.

You’ve got it so easy! I mean, compared to even my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids today don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalogue!!

There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter, with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there! That’s if you got lucky and it arrived on time!!

There were no MP3' s or Napsters! If you wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself! Or you had to wait around all day to tape your favorite music off the radio and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and end and screw it all up!

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it! We didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your Bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances!!!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had Remco playstations made from plastic that only used your imagination that my dad left us and it did absolutely nothing! Later on we finally had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'asteroids'. Your guy was a little square! Once again you actually had to use your imagination!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win,never! The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on TV! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your arse and walk over to the TV to change the channel because even if your family was rich enough to afford a remote TV who could ever find it. Besides it would break in a month!!

And there was no Cartoon Network either!

You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning!! Do you hear what I'm saying?!! We had to wait all week for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-bast-rds! And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove or oven ... Imagine that! Sometimes we even used a sunny window to defrost!!

That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled!!

You guys wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes back in 1970!

But ya know what, I wouldn't trade it for the world. I'm sure you agree with me. Great post man. I laughed my ass off reading that and was going "yeah, YEAH, these punks don't get it".

They also have it tougher. They are exposed to much more, earlier. I think we grew up in a more carefree time. At least it seems that way to me. Perspective is a bytch.

I wouldn't want to be kid nowadays, but then again, thing may be changing for the better. An economic cleansing will help to re-evaluate what is truly important in life. However, the bill is going to come due one day soon and these kids are gonna be in deep doo-doo.

funny rant... i ell-oh-elled 3 or 4 times...

but then you (or at least i) stop and think to yourself: ... "what have we truly left them with?"... because, in 10-25 years, they may well have it worse then our parents and even grandparents ever had it..

the generation under 30, under 20, under 10? they'll all be the movers and shakers during truly dark times that seem increasingly on the horizon... they'll have the tough decisions to make ...

that's the morbid side of me talking, surely... i'm not yet convinced our 60-year empire is finished already... but it's hard to remain optimistic, because it's all happening all around us -- and has been for a decade... everything that's been predicted, cept for a military draft (yet)... oil depletion, insider trading, deregulation, credit industry fallout, bank collapse, unending military conflict, terror "alerts," skyrocketing energy costs, insane propaganda, corporate socialism... on and on and on and on and on and on...

i don't believe the bailout will work, and i don't believe its honestly intended to work... and i don't believe our economy can survive another jolt of ANY kind... it won't be long before what's left of the world's affordable energy sources are officially priced in Euros, not the US dollar, globally... and grumblings exist that that reality is already in the works...

it's all rather disgusting, if you ask me... and i'm often left musing: "will our kids' generation ever forgive us?"

You brought a chuckle more than once with this one, as it puts some things into perspective.

As someone once named Zimmerman sang, "the times, they are a-changing..."

Trouble is -- the Challenge is -- that those times may bring good change or bad change; that has not been fully decided yet, decided by ... the people. There is a clear consensus that today the world is getting smaller and smaller, as people all over the world are getting the same physical external things, like cell-phones, TV, internet, etc. The physical comforts and ease of life are gradually reaching everybody on earth.

But what remains to come is the most critical of all: the manner and means -- the glue -- to hold it all together, to bind people here with people there and everywhere, all races, all faiths, all nationalities into one world family. I humbly suggest this may happen only as one world family under God. When the leaders of faith meet together to share their dreams and ideals, then the course for the future will look brighter and clearer than ever before.

Faith, perspective, world view, outlook amd philosophy of life ... of these are found in religious faiths. So there needs to be a convocation of all faith leaders in order to iron out the pathway to the future.

PC, it will be a good sign if they don't. It will mean that they get it, that people have developed an understanding of a long view of events, and that they don't break down to just "what happened this week." For example, look at us: not a word for the last few weeks about anthropogenic global warming. Well, recently a trans-atlantic current got much colder, some penguins got confused, and they started washing up all over the beaches of Brazil, many alive, overwhelming that nation's zoos. The numbers of lost penguins this year are an unmistakeable sign that there is a big difference. The much colder ocean current coming off Africa could be cause be ohhhhh a zillion things, I am sure, and were this not happening in the presence of the spin-counterspin on the economy, the right wing would also have ginned up something about a natural cycle that has nothing to do with glacial or sea-ice melt. But it sure looks like the latter to me.

Long story short, they'll have another world to deal with, in a few scant decades. Americans are inching closer to the rest of the world in terms of lifestyle, and lurching a little closer as of this week. Now we'll move steadily in that direction for a few years. Are there solutions? Maybe not to the problem of diminishing hegemony. But to the problem of human needs, yes. We can learn from the other industrial democracies and take care of our own. It's possible that with the confluence of the more civic-minded Gen Ys coming of age specifically at this time, we will see great things.

The very things in this rant -- and it is funny as hell -- might actually be a boon in this generation's shaping. Generation Y, according to surveys, is optimistic, somewhat spoiled in terms of expectations of opportunity and "buy-in," more civic-minded, and especially, more hungry to be connected than generations before them.

Think about that: yes, we did have to go hours filling time not in contact with human beings. For instance, we may have done our homework, then just putzed around in our room for many an hour. We also played outside with real live friends. Well, to use the broad brush of what's happening more and what's happening less, a kid today plays outside less (out of the few hours we used to do that,) but at all times has access to connection to other people. And they use it.

A great deal's been made of the fact that now, when you walk down the street, so many people are on their hands-free cell phones, that it looks like everybody is walking around talking to themselves, even though they're middle class white kids nowhere near a mental hospital. Sure. Bear in mind though, those kids are ALWAYS aware of the old adage, "no man is an island." Does it make them less capable of bearing loneliness at one time or another? Maybe. Does it make them feel more a part of a greater whole? If their tendency to voluntarism is anything to judge by, I think so.

Just as the WWII generation needed to be challenged by the hippy types, just as they turned into yuppies developing strip malls and needed to see their ideals mocked by nihilistic and slightly more tech savvy Gen Xers, we need the challenge of kids who live and breathe connectedness by virtue of their lifestyle. And just as the WWII generation were "natives" to radio and immigrants to "television"; As the hippies were "natives" of television and "immigrants" to computers; and as many gen Xers were "natives" of computers and "immigrants" to the web/constant cell phone use/etc., these kids are the "natives" of those Weapons of Mass Connection.

Will/do we need a society acting in one anothers' interests, extending a hand? Will/do we need those ideas coming into the workplace? Does it/will it make a difference? Of course. That is the generational process.

I like to dwell on the hope that younger generations represent because I'm such a big fat polyanna. Maybe they'll even get that the US is one of 200 odd nations, that we're 5 percent of the population, and that the task at hand is getting resources to all of us.

Maybe, when it comes down to it, they'll look around (just as people did 70-80 years ago now,) and say "hey. Wait a minute. All we really need is what we eat, a place to live, a way to pay for it... and a wireless connection." Well, that last part will be new. But could we see a turning away from the materialist mindset, when people spend so much time in gadgetry? Oddly enough, yes. Gadgets are cheap. Snowmobiles and jet-skis are expensive.

Real World

We had it better bro. We actually have people skills, and aren't afraid to socialize with fellow human beings in person. today's generation plays video games alone at home, shop online for a date, and text each other when they want to break up. Today's generation sucks. I personally wouldn't want to be them.
