And, every election we here the people running talk about how crazy it is to give oil companies tax subsidies because of how much profit they make. Yet, once those people get elected they do nothing to get rid of those subsidies. You just know that while they are running and saying their BS they are communicating to big oil that they really won't touch them.

And if Americans knew that eliminating these subsidies would result in significant increases in fuel costs, they wouldn't want them eliminated.

One thing I will say, is that if we're comparing the "cheap" oil to the "expensive" alternatives, we should certainly include the cost of the subsidies to the fossil fuel industries over the last century plus.

I think we'll end up saying that we have to subsidize energy, for various reasons. So the question becomes not whether to subsidize energy, but whether, for the federal government's (i.e., our) largesse, we are allowed to subsidize what's in all of our interests over time.

I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just saying that we have to be prepared to pay more for by-products of these things if you want to stop subsidies. Unless you favor gov't controlled prices...and I highly doubt you do.
Very valid point PR. I assume that cutting whatever subsidies currently exist in those three markets would raise the price to me and you.

But at what point do we take a hard look and say "maybe by subsidizing oil companies (in this example) it is keeping our country/economy/world back from true growth and replacement of fossil fuels as a huge/main portion of our energy sources?"

The convenience of it has made us lazy...not to mention fossil fuels do not work for our betterment.

Just my 2 cents.
