Actually this news is more disconcerting. It makes it seem like this will always have to be something we will need to worry about with him.

No......

“But ultimately, he’s going to end up with an arm that’s normal and functioning normal for him.”

So just the opposite of that.

Are they gonna take out that brace later?

The Patriots have been overachievers the past two years. It doesn't have the talent to compensate for injuries, and it wins so much because it puts in 99% effort in the regular season and plays with terrific schemes to mask its deficiencies.

But in the playoffs a good team at 99% will not beat emotional, talented teams that play at 100%. It's what happened against the Giants in 2011 and the Ravens in 2012.

I guess the nature of the reports is to affirm that Gronk wasn't brought back "too early" per se - just the dumb luck of landing on his arm the way he did caused a new break.

None of that really matters to the team - they'll have to do a better job overcoming his loss than they did last year. And this year their added depth gives them a much better chance of doing that.
Not just increased stress points, the bone beyond the fracture weakens during the healing process as the body focuses on rebuilding the area of the fracture at the same time lack of use is causing atrophy .

Not sure that forearm will ever be trustworthy again, if it ever was. And certainly not until both plates are removed. Which wouldn't be advisable for a year or so and requires another procedure that poses it's own short term risks (removing screws that will leave holes in bone that will have to fill in again and heal over time.

Gronk by nature lands hard and like that a lot. Color me concerned about Gronk going forward, period.

Ultimately as in if nothing else transpires. Ultimately as in eventually. If he is still playing with a plate in his arm next season or if he has them both removed (which the literature suggests would be early) he will not have a functional normal for him arm for some time. If you wrap him in bubble wrap next season he might be functionally normal in 2014.

Given that he didn't land in any specifically "bad" way, it's hard to believe this is just a freak thing.

Which means the arm will always be bad, unless as a previous poster said, the arm will be weaker where it wasn't broken for a while but then possibly strengthen?

I wonder if the plan is to remove this plate thing eventually, or just leave it in forever. What is the standard procedure for such a thing?

GIven that he'll have about 6-7 months to heal before contact, will that make a break like this one less likely next year?

If heh has to wait for a year to take out the plate (if it is protocol to remove such a thing), then he has to play all of next year with it in.

Given that he didn't seem to do much in the initial break, I wondering if there isn't something bigger wrong here.

Hope not.

So, if Gronk didn't break the same bone the original break should be doing very well, right? And Gronk was practicing 2 or 3 weeks after his last surgery if I remember correctly, right? Super Bowl is almost 3 weeks away...just saying.

Maybe we can have him install a bionic arm like Ray Lewis.
