He is not a good run defender. Thats what one trick pony means, his only strength is rushing the passer and he is weak in the other aspects of his game.
How many tackles he has is not evidence he is a good run defender (which is what yuo implied) and often indicative with a DL of being targetted because he is a weak run defender.

I guess Chandler Jones is a one trick pony too because he is primarily here to rush the passer and cause havoc on the OT

I would absolutely love to have those more of these one trick ponies on the team if they dominate at the one trick they do ,give me guys like Aldon Smith all day

That being said,no one is saying that Smith is better than Watt,the point here is that Watt gets recognized for a lot of what he does,Smith has been under the radar all season while being close to 20 sacks.

Chandler Jones has played the run extremely well.
How much you value the one trick does not change the fact that it is.
Well, since I said Watt is better than Smith BECAUSE he is a complete player and you are arguing that STILL, it would appear that you are saying Smith is better.
I am pointing out that a couple of more sacks playing a role that is more conducive to sacks, while being not very good at the otehr responsiblities he has makes him a lesser player.

NO he didnt.. are u blind? He's defending that you called smith a one trick pony which is a joke. A one trick pony would be like a Bruce Irvin. IVe watched all of san frans games on game pass and smith is solid against the run.


Last year he was a one trick pony because thats all he was asked to do. This year he is a 3-down OLB who DOES drop in coverage and who DOES stop the run and who DOES lead the league in sacks.

No one said hes better then watt, but he sure aint a one trick pony andy boy.

That would be true, except that Jones is actually very good at setting the edge and using his long arms to avoid being engaged by blockers. Perhaps most importantly, he is not a traditional edge rusher, in that he doesn't sprint upfield and attempt to beat the tackle around the corner. He engages and beats the blocker, which means he doesn't open up a massive running lane in his attempt to get to the QB. That's a huge dela, and it's the biggest reason we's a good run defender - not great, but maybe he'll become that down the line. He's clearly not a finished product yet, as either a run defender or pass rusher.

This is the kind of conversation that you can't have on the basis of incredibly simple stats like tackles. You have to watch the games, understand what's happening, and apply an awful lot of qualitative analysis.

Well yeah, any team in the league would be happy to have Aldon Smith. The one thing that he's exceptional at is very important and hard to find.

I second that. I am not impressed by his coverage skills, but everything else I like a lot from him. Overall, I think is an elite player, yes I said elite!!
