Default Aaron Hernandez' ankle not broken, according to source

Maybe a high ankle sprain? Won't be a picnic, but not as dire as feared.

This, in a nutshell, is why I didn't like wasting the in-season IR exception on Shiancoe. Would be nice to have it available for Hernandez (or, if his injury is not severe, one of 20 or so other players who's bound to get hurt at some point) right now.

Wasted?......If AH is out for an extended period, doesn't it work out that we have a receiving Te after 6 games?

It's too early to speculate on the extent of this injury. The fact that nothing is broken but that something is obviously serious wrong could in fact be worse news than a break. If after an MRI they determine it is a tendon (i.e. posterior tibial tendon) it would be the end of the season for him. Even a damaged tendon (not torn) would require stabilization of the foot/ankle for at least 2 or 3 months. Best case scenerio at this point would be a high ankle strain.

People hear the word sprain and they think they lucked out. We should know better. Depending on the amount of sprain or tear this is often a 4-8 week injury at best and a season ending one at worst. A misdiagnosed high ankle sprain was how Ty Law's career here ended. They waited on it for several weeks before realizing it required surgery. Brady was able to play through his twice, but at the QB position heavily taped and shot up.

I am not downplaying the severity of a high ankle sprain, my point was that a tendon injury is worse than a break and would probably mean the end of the season. And no, I am not a doc.

And many of us know sprains can be worse than breaks. That looked awful. No I am not a doctor but I don't expect him back before thanksgiving.
