Default Perillo: Mayo makes "play of camp"

Quote:
Belichick was again chose to do some live goal line work toward the end of practice and the results were typically exciting. The play of camp was turned in by Jerod Mayo, who stoned Laurence Maroney with a great shoulder hit at the 1 to give the defense a win.

Can this really be happening?

Wow. We drafted a guy that can stop Maroney at the goal line.

Okay, that puts him in the top 90% of all defensive players...

A bit harsh, but in the link it lists 3 other times they ran the drill in which the offense punched it in, including a Morris run. I like Maroney. I keep waiting for the next big thing from him, and the end of last season was a very nice surprise. But I mean... I don't see the name Maroney and think "unstoppable goal line force."

We've heard for years how it takes forever to understand the BB system at LB, how a rookie has little chance of making an impact specifically because of that transition. Here you have a kid who's never played the 3-4, a rookie surrounded by SB vets, with a ton of pressure to make an impact... And he seems to be doing it every practice.

Obviously, the games are what matter. Still, Perillo has a critical eye and does not give out compliments freely.

Things seem to be going better than I could have hoped for, knock on wood (I am literally doing that).

Yeah, I think I'll choose to be excited as well. Sure beats waiting for the next installment of the Favre saga.

The OP was a bit dramatic with the comment, but the fact remains that Mayo has thus far impressed in camp. And that ain't nothing but a good thing.

Well, they trusted Maroney enough to use him on the goal line on the only 2-point try of the season. . . .

Yep, it's funny how quickly we forget all the cries of "don't you know by now, BB does NOT draft LBs on the first day!" All Mayo has done so far is 100% of what he possibly could do so far: look exciting, effective and ahead of schedule in TC. I'll take it.

Apropos of nothing, reports from Jets camp say that Gholston is looking a little lost trying to play in space....

Hey point taken, just saying let's realize we're choosing to be excited. Hope sells clicks and papers in training camp. So the way you write it isn't "annnnd Maroney couldn't cross the stripe," or "so-and-so couldn't defend a Cassel pass," you have to write about the offense doing something good and the defensive prospect levelling this veteran starter.

Still I have heard nothing but good things about Mayo, and YES I would love to see Mayo being a right-out-of-the-box force.

So yeah okay, rah rah, I'm in LOL
