Default idle thoughts - quick post game thoughts

OK I am pissed about the 21 4th quarter points, but I decided to embrace it. I don't care anymore about comments about the weakness of the defense. Its not going to matter anyway. They could shut out everyone else for the rest of the season, and the headline going into the playoffs is going to be the 2 one and dones the last 2 years.

Time to undergo a change of mindset. Time to embrace my inherent "underdogness". You just can't take offense to the reality that the Pats are going to go into this playoff BEHIND in the minds of the pundits Baltimore and the Ravens. But that's OK, as long as we get the bye.

Forget about the pass defense here are the things we REALLY should be concerned with.

1. The running game. They really didn't do much against one of the worst run defenses in the league. There were a couple of plays I noticed where the Pats lined up Waters, Cannon, and Solder and they DIDN'T get any push against the Colts THAT group should get push against the Ravens, let alone the Colts. very disappointing.

2.The fact that the offense ended the game with three 3 and outs. That's almost incredible to me, given the way the Colts played in the secondary. Clearly you CANNOT play zone against the Pats and consistently stop him. It was the reason for 2 of the last scores the Colts got.

3. I commented at half time of the game day thread, that I though Brady was impatient and somewhat stubborn early in the game. In the first 2 TD drives, when he was willing to hit the open RBs and someone other than Branch Gronk and Hernandez, the offense made it look really easy In the 4th quarter he seemed to go back to those bad habits and the offense 0nce again stalled

4. The lack of sacks and hits by the DL was disturbing, especially in the 2nd half This is NOT one of the best OLs in the league. I expect more. Even the run D wasn't as stout as I would have hoped

The good things

1. This team seems to take to heart what the coaches say, and at least TRY to accomplish what they want. Clearly BB has a LOT of coachable points to make this week. Plus the way the Jets slithered by the Washington, I doubt he'll let them underestimate the Skins.

2. As badly as I thought the run blocking was, I was impressed how well the Pats kept Brady clean against the strength of the Colt D. McDonald did an amazing job for a guy who just had 3 practices with the team. That's some amazing coaching.

It also makes the Taylor Price release clearer. The Pats HAD to bring in McDonald. They KNEW he'd have to play, so someone had to go. Do you cut Brown who should never be on the field for a regular defensive snap, but plays on most of the special teams, or should it be Price, who seems to play on NO special teams and is the # last WR, on a team where they have 2 back up WRs (Ocho, Edelman) on a offense that seems to throw only to its starters as it is.

When you put it that way, its really a no brainer. But it does leave open the possibility that they resign Price if no one picks him up on waivers and there's an injury at WR and they get a couple of C's back

3. It looked like the there wasn't any new injuries this week. Fingers crossed

Miscellaneous observations

1. I'm kind of glad that Orlofsky had a respectable day. Its always nice to see a New England kid who went to a New England college do well. Especially one whose name is is in the very thin book of Jewish football players, and he is going to need to have a job, since his wife is expecting TRIPLETS very soon.

2. Its very likely that there will be 4 teams with 13-3 records, two of whom will have to be wild card teams. Its a long way from the days when the Pats could get a bye with an 11-5 record. It will be interesting to see how that will play out.

3. With 5 minutes left in the game the Skins were 3 points ahead of the Jets. Then a kicker ONCE AGAIN, misses the KO and the Jets wind up starting their drive on the 50. Then in the next series Grossman fumbles it and the rout was on.

Just some quick thoughts to start the week.

If we won this game 34-3, I doubt I'd feel much different. The Colts are a horrible team and either way you can't take much away from this game. In 2007 and 2010 we blew teams pretty consistently and that didn't help us any in January.

It bothered me more than Atlanta couldn't beat Houston and it looks like none of the other games have gone our way. Looking like we have zero margin for error if we want that bye, if we even can get it with 13-3.

The way the Raiders played today and the Texans looking vulnerable....11-5 might get the bye

I agree on the run blocking- it was one of the poorer points of execution in the game.

This game should have been a domination, and yet all of the bad habits of this team came right back up. That can scarcely be reassuring, this late in the season. Does not do wonders for the team's chance in the playoffs.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Hoyer was the QB at this time, no?

Doesn't explain why they cut Price over Underwood. If Price was any good, they could have kept him AND Sergio Brown AND bring in McDonald. The real problem was that he was not adequately progressing, not the numbers game you are suggesting.

Terrible job by the D. Awful.

Belichick should, and will, rip them a new one this week. As for the idea that "this team seems to take to heart what the coaches say," I couldn't disagree more strongly. This team -- not all of them, but enough of them -- figured BB's just doing what he does, puffing up a bad opponent, and came in mentally weak. A RIDICULOUS performance. Pathetic.

Hope they learn from it.

im not too concerned either way really. those 3 TD's came in Garbage time. its upsetting that they really gave no effort in the 4th quarter...but I doubt thats the effort they put forward against a good team.

some points though...I thought ochocinco looked alot more comfortable in the offense. its too bad he couldnt haul in that deep pass. but he was in on some no huddle sets which is good to see.

Tiquan Underwood is already more successful as a patriot than T.Price. he was targeted by brady and has a catch
