Default OT: Fred Davis may be the biggest sleeper of the draft

Well the scouting reports said he was a "sleeper pick"

Skins learn no-show rookie, TE Fred Davis, slept through practice
May 4, 2008
CBSSports.com wire reports

ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Redskins second-round draft pick Fred Davis did not show up for minicamp practice Sunday, having overslept on just his third day in the NFL.

The team sent security officials to track down the tight end after he failed to arrive as scheduled from a local hotel, where the rookies were housed during the three-day minicamp.

"Everybody was scouring," coach Jim Zorn said after the practice. "Nobody heard from him, so there was one of two scenarios: either there was some real trouble and we needed to find him, or he screwed up. I haven't even got to talk to him yet. I know he has been found. I believe it is more in the 'I screwed up' category."

Davis eventually arrived at Redskins Park and met with Zorn in his office.

"He just had a setback," the coach said. "Hopefully everybody will learn from the lesson that he is having to learn right now about what it is going to take to get to a place on time, to be responsible."

Davis was the 48th overall pick out of Southern California in last weekend's draft.

That is not showing much respect for your team or organization.

His third day? And he's not just late, but misses the practice and has to have the team track him down?

A sarcastic Bill Belichick on Tom Brady's finger injury, "It's not life threatening."

If that had been Belichick, would the kid be on a plane paying his own way home?

Whatever. Kid was nervous before his performance at this first minicamp, wakes up frequently during the night, falls to sleep late and doesn't wake up on time.

You see similar behavior on the field all the time, when receivers look to run before catching the ball.

No excuse. He wasn't just a no show, he apparantly doesn't know what a phone is.

Nightmare start. Taxi for Fred Davis..

This is the kind of situation that give the lie to all the platitudes about how "it doesn't matter where you were drafted, we're all starting from the same place here trying to make the team." If Davis were a UDFA rather than a 2nd rounder, don't you think he would have been shown the door to make a point? (And I'm sure this holds for the Patriots too. I can't see them cutting Wheatley just because he set his alarm clock wrong for minicamp.)

Great thread title,

I feel bad for this guy... waking up late for something important and feeling that panic and OH S$%^ moment are pretty much very terrible.

I never understood that exactly. People oversleep all the time. Even for big things. It just happens, it's not a character flaw or a sign that he doesn't give a horse's rear end.

Sometimes you need to give people a break.

The patriots handle it thusly...players get fined by other players if they are late to meetings. Or miss them. I believe that's right. If someone skipped a whole meeting, maybe they wouldn't play or start, or get a fine from the Pats.

I don't think he'd be on the way home if he were on the Pats. A second round pick? Even an UDFA would be given another chance, I'd believe.
