Default My Quick and Simple Plan

Argue the exact values of the trade all you like, I think they're close enough to be reasonable.

Right now we're basically down Moss, Colvin, Samuel. Gay is a JAG to me.

Re-Sign Moss. The offense is done.

Trade #7 to Philly for Sheppard and #17. Samuel is replaced.
Draft a CB at #17, that's a good spot for CB this year. Gay is replaced.
Trade our #2 and #3 to Miami for Jason Taylor. Colvin is replaced.

Done.

This is the only one I have a real problem with. Taylor is too old to give up that much youth for. Those are draft positions where your chances of getting a starter are pretty decent. I personally wouldn't trade two chances of getting a starting caliber player for 2-3 years of production out of a proven player.

Jason Taylor is older and more expensive than Colvin. Trading away two cheaper picks who could reasonably fill in is a bad idea. We could have two quality players for significantly less than Taylor. Remember, this year's draft is considered markedly deeper than last year's.

Samuel is marginally better than Sheppard. I don't have an issue with this part. But why use #17 on a CB who would be paid the same as Gay when we already have a player who is quality (though not a star), who already knows the defense

I like and agree with all of that except for maybe the last point.

Taylor is a DE so I don't know how well he would replace Colvin. Not saying that he can't, just that it wouldn't be a given. Also think that a #2 and #3 seems a bit too much.

If we give up less for Taylor, great. I didn't want to under offer, though, and make it unrealistically good for us.

Regarding #17 on a CB - two things - one is I want an upgrade over Gay, we need 3 quality CB. Also Hobbs is only signed for two more years. If we draft a guy this year and sign Sheppard to an extension we have two guys locked up for about 5 years.

We need our #2 and #3. We have one player from last years draft. We need more youth on the roster. I dont care about Jason Taylor when we have Vrabel and Thomas./

The trouble with trading away draft picks for veteran players is

economic. If the veteran player is any good, he will consume much

more salary cap space than a rookie. Players with rookie contracts

are needed for salary cap relief.

Horrible trades

I would never give up swap the 7th pick for Sheppard.

the 2nd and 3rd for a 3x years old guy? no way.

Don't panic!

A 2nd and 3rd for Taylor? That is a spectacular trade - for Miami. Sorry, but Taylor is not a guy I am ready to give up two high picks for at this point in his career. What would the Pats get out of him? One to three years? Belichick and Pioli are in this to compete for Super Bowls until they retire, not just win in 2008.

Personally, I would rather give Calvin Pace a Adalius Thomas type of contract (which I would not actually advocate) over giving that much for Jason Taylor.

Also, if we get Lito Sheppard, I am totally against using the 17th pick in the draft to go after a nickelback. You want an impact starter at 17, not a guy who comes in on passing plays only.

thats great and all...except that you dont adress our need at ILB, and i like your plan, except i propose that we draft young ilb's with the 3rd rd picks...

we have AD and Vrabel outside...im thinking Woods can handle rotational duty and backup...

we need two ilbs or at the very least ONE, to sub in for seau(i think hes coming back) and bruschi....

and we go to press coverage from now on, with hobbs playing press and our cb we get at 17 will also play press....

btw, another way would be to draft a lb at 17, and cbs twice in 3rd round

i also believe that our O if fine after moss is resigned...but you can expect the second day TE draftee as well
