Default Pick 6

OK, embarassing question here.

I don't think I heard the expression "pick 6" before this year.

Is this new or is it as old as the hills and I just missed it previously?

Either way, it's great, and we need a Pats reprise of Ty Law in SB 36 in this one. (My own story on that is that I turned to the guy next to me at that game about 1 minute before that happened and said that the Pats needed a defensive TD.)

It's fairly new, not sure exactly when it started - this year or last year I think. Just like "walkoff homerun" started in baseball a few years ago then was used as commonly as if it had heen around forever.

It's actually an old horse racing term that's recently come into use in football. It required that the bettor select the winning horse in 6 consecutive races (with very high payout relative to the bet)

It's also used in some state lotteries. Somewhere along the line, pick became a synonym for INT, someone figured out that you get 6 for actually returning the INT for a TD, and, voilà, "Pick 6."

I'd like to see Tedy Brouhaha get a pick-6 on Sunday.

I think Chris Fowler started using it in the football sense on college gameday at the beginning of last season. And then everyone else on ESPN started using it.

I know I heard it last season a few times, that's when I started using it. I have no idea when it was made into a football term or by whom.

The walkoff is attributed to Dennis Eckersley in the late 80s, from the Kirk Gibson HR specifically, although it doesn't seem like it's that old. He also started "high cheese" for high fast stuff. Pick 6 seems like a very recent thing.

To elaborate more...

PICK= Picked off
Have been saying that for a long time. "QB back for a pass, throws deep, and its picked off". Now shortend to PICK

And like he said..
actually returning the INT(pick) for a TD, and, voilà, "Pick 6"
