Default Mallet on ESPN

Mallett staying sharp during lockout - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Ive been wondering on this playbook thing why cant a Vet make copies of his playbook and just give them to Mallet on the down low? I know the 2011 version would have changes, but the basic concepts wouldnt change that much would they?

I believe that kind of thing is basically happening. However, it may not happen until somebody meets a rookie face to face, and judges him to be a not-flake.

It would depend on a teams willingness to condone that. Playbooks are normally guarded like nuclear codes. Vets may not even be in possession of them unless they broke pre existing rules. They are collected at the end of the season when teams are doing their medical checks and players are clearing out their lockers because you never know who will be back or who will be suiting up for a competitor.

Knowing Belichick I doubt he believes the reward of passing out playbooks sans coaching is worth the risk. He doesn't seen to think much of the calue of player organized workouts either.

Remember, there was a short period of time around days 1 and 2 of the draft when the lockout was not in effect, and player-coach contact was permitted.

I remember reading that at least some players (not necessarily Patriots) did get playbooks while the lockout was lifted.

I know. But if I recall correctly no Patriots players showed up at Gillette and even if they had I'm not sure Bill would have been handing out literature...

If I were a NEP player I'd be hard pressed to duplicate and hand out anything somehow in my possession without the express consent of it's author/owner which supposedly isn't readily ascertainable at the moment...

You remember incorrectly. Quite a few players made a stop in as did Solder.

The first round rookies all got to show up at their facility for the media meet and greet. Some got playbooks, others (Pouncy) didn't. We don't know what the Patriots did with Solder. No NEP veteran players showed up during the brief unlocked period. Very few showed up league wide. If playbooks are collected at the end of each season...

I forgot about that. The one day opening... Knowing Bill though nothing was handed out to the handful who were in the area that Friday and managed to get in.

If I had to guess, the most useful thing for Solder would probably be game tape of Vollmer. . . .
