Maybe its just me, but I dont get the comments I am seeing on Rivers.
I realize his teammate sat on the sidelines all day, but it wasn't like his leg was failing off and had to be amputated after the game.
People are posting about how they have great respect for him, how gritty or ever heroic he was.
I think what he did was simply normal. You have an injury that you are capable of playing with, and you play.
Rivers playing with some pain and a limp does nothing to elevate my opinion, but him NOT playing in that condition would have lowered my opinion.
It seems the opposite has happened here, where Rivers playing through what I would expect any QB to play through, has extinguished all of the low opinions, and reason for them, about him and elevated him.
I just dont get why him playing yesterday is considered extraordinary.

Funny thing, the Pats beat two guys with the last name "River(s)" in each of their playoff games. Phillip and Jack DelRio. Weird.

Watching that game, it seemed to me that the Patriots wanted Philip Rivers to play. Probably easier to deal with an injured Rivers than try to guess what Volek could bring. Billy Volek could be anything from stellar to disastrous, and I'm not so sure I'd want to find out on the fly.
The Patriots didn't do a whole lot of blitzing, even with Rivers clearly injured knee. I'm guessing they were thinking that Philip, given the opportunity, would throw a pick at the least opportune time - which, of course, he did.
Four red zone trips and no touchdowns. An interception that made it a two score game (I believe). Philip Rivers was no hero of that game.

Rivers played in a lot of pain. He looked like he was walking on mud all game. He couldn't plant his feet and step into a few of his throws. He lost a lot of velocity on some throws and we suffered because of that. Trust me, it would have been worst if Volek had played.

I wasn't in awe of his play or anything but perhaps it has to do with him sitting out the end of the Colts game and being listed as "doubtful" for this game. I guess it comes down to your expectations of him as a player...

IMHO, Rivers played up to his potential and beyond. Gates did what his body would allow (the other receivers stepped up). On the other hand, LT had no idea how to deal with an injury.
Make no mistake, this will be a team that will be in the hunt for the conference championship again next year, along with us and the colts.
We should again be the best of the three, as we have been since the 2003 season.

Rivers will need surgery to repair the torn ACL. There is the possibility he will miss the season opener next year.
That news surfaced this morning.
I have watched all the Charger games this year, and I have never liked Phil Rivers. That all changed after the Colts game and got reinforced yesterday.
Rivers put it on the line and played the game. The knee was damaged, and it(both knees) must have hurt like hell, but he played the game. LT's strength is in the red zone...the Chargers did not score a TD.
I have no idea why LT decided not to play..even if it was his decision, but there is something in that entire scenario that isn't right.
Strange game in retrospect...Brady was off; Moss was no where around during or after the game; Belichick took the ball away from Brady in the fourth quarter and gave it to Maroney, and LT watched from the sidelines in full battle gear without so much as cheering his team...at least from the camera shots we witnessed..LT was only a presence.

I mostly agree with the praise being overstated--he could play so he played. If it was the Pats, you just wouldn't have heard anything about it, probably. Having said that, I guess you give props to him for playing, when it might have been a real hard hit away from putting his career on the line.
The guy is a total tool, though. But maybe he'll grow up.

Rivers was put in an impossible situation by his coach (whose time in SD is measured in weeks, not years). Norv should never have allowed him to be on that field. His throws were all arm, no strength from his legs. To his credit, he did reasonably well but his limitations were evident in the red zone.
Regardless of the injury, if the coach leaves the decision to play in the AFCC game up to you...you HAVE to say yes. If you beg out of the game, even for legitimate reasons, you will lose your leadership in the locker room. At that point, start counting the days until free agency.
This is why Norv is a disaster everywhere he goes. He is so terrified of making a bad decision that he allows decisions to be made for him. No leadership. No direction. And with that cast of characters in SD, he should already be polishing up his resume. Atlanta should need a new coach sometime in the next year or two...
