This is the best thing about Bill,” said linebacker Junior Seau. “He doesn’t even show us everything. We’ll come into a meeting and he’ll throw the whole game plan away and we’ll start over.
“He doesn’t show us his hand. He doesn’t say, ‘This is what we might do. We might save this for such and such.’ He doesn’t do that. He keeps it in his own locker under wraps and then throws it at us. I mean, if you guys in the media are surprised, imagine us.”
Bill is a secretive guy - maybe more secretive than any coach I've ever heard about. He rolls things out in ways that make it very hard to predict what's coming next. If an offense keys in on a certain look, it might just disappear, to be replaced by something totally foreign. Nobody can leak this to the spies either (oh, there are spies in the NFL, and they work for other saintly teams?)
It does make me wonder what he's going to roll out tonight. I think on defense there will be things that Garrard has never seen, and we'll see at least one turnover result when he puts one in the air to the wrong color jersey.

Bill is so secretive that he tattoos the game plan on a different part of his body. When it's complete, then he knocks himself on the head. So even he doesn't know the whole gameplan, so he can't inadvertently give it away to his own team, through his own tendencies.
Then, during halftime, he strips and learns the rest of the gameplan.
Of course, this is also why he was forced to wear the hoodie on the beach during Pro Bowl week last year.

One of the most revealing aspects of BB's success is that he does the most ACTUAL on the field coaching than any HC in the league. We've all seen examples of him taking the time to teach LBs, DBs, DL, OL, RBs QBs, etc. at training camp.
The shots we get almost weekly of him with a chalkboard making adjustments on defense are unique in the league (IIRC). I doubt any other HC in the league does more actual TEACHING individual players than BB.

I did not know that. I assumed the opposite - that most HCs were teachers and on the field with the players in teaching situations daily.

You hardly ever see others doing it. That must be why a lot of coordinators don't seem to have the same success on their side of the ball, because they aren't using their expertise a lot. That's why we have the best of both worlds. Belichick was a Top Five of all time DC - by getting him as a HC we also get that great DC because he remains so hands on. As opposed to a lot of HC who seem to wash their hands of the coaching/teaching and delegate it to others.
