Default Kraft on Moss

Quote:
Q: How well have you gotten to know Randy Moss? From your perspective , how well has he fit in and adjusting to the Patriot way?

A: I had a chance to chat with him before he signed his contract. It was a great private discussion. As I recall, Jonathan was with me. We chatted with him. I explained to him what was important to me and my family and how we do things both on and off the field. He told me what was important to him. What impressed me right away was, number one, how smart he was. Number two, he says, ‘Look, I’ve made . . .’ and he told me how much money he’s made, which was a lot. And he said, ‘It isn’t about money for me. It’s about winning.’ He said, ‘Look, I want to be a part of this Patriot organization and help you win, and I want to have the Patriot name associated with me.’ And I think he’s pretty much lived up to his end.All of my interface with him has been very sound. I know some things that he’s done the media doesn’t know about that’s really quite impressive to me. He’s a guy who cares about kids. I’ve seen it first hand. I’ve seen what he’s done out of the public eye with no fanfare that is very impressive.

He came down to the funeral of Marquise Hill. He just did things that were very respectul of Marquise and his family and just showed a sense of committment to the team, and he was a new member, and that was a very hard thing. I can honestly say, I have not seen him do anything that isn’t within the spirit of what we want.

Q: Are you hoping to keep Randy in a Patriot uniform for a long time?

A: I hope so. I hope he remains here a long time. There are always two sides. I hope and believe both sides want it, but you’ve got to get it executed. It’s worked out pretty well for both parties so far.

I find it really nice that he went to Marquise Hill's funeral.

In 2001, he signed an 8 year $75 Million contract with an $18 million signing bonus so if you add that to his annual salary as reported by the NFLPA website of $20 (add up annual salary which doesn't include bonuses IIRC)
it totals $38 million or so in that neighborhood...Remember he renegotiated the back end of the deal as part of the trade to come to the Patriots so whatever number he reported to Mr. Kraft, it was a healthy one.

Moss will be with the Pats until he retires. He realizes that by being a Patriot and having Tom Brady as his QB, he'll forever be known as one of the top receivers ever in the NFL. Not only has his reputation been elevated, his place in history has been firmly established.

I see the Pats pay Moss more money, but still get him for a bargain. Nowhere else will he be so challenged, focused, driven and successful. Moss is now a true blessing to the Patriots team and fans and to the NFL overall.

In a sense the Pats, and we their fans, are very lucky that Randy went to Oakland for 2 seasons and felt the sting of losing while collecting a hefty paycheck. It's the opposite of a guy like Ty Law who is a fierce competitor but clearly valued his paycheck over championships. I don't hold that against Ty but it is patently obvious to me that Randy is more interested than winning than collecting a huge paycheck so long as the Pat's offer is reasonable.

I'll be shocked if he doesn't retire a Patriot after signing a longterm deal in the offseason.
