    Default Spygate rule

I have heard people say that the rule with the carera that the patriots got busted for was not a rule until 2006. Can anyone confirm this?

I've said this multiple times, and by extension that even if the Pats were taping in previous years, it wouldn't taint their titles since it wasn't against the rules, as the media wants to argue. The 2006 rulebook in my possession that doesn't even have said rule in it. It was a memo that year, and only added to this year's book.

I would be very interested in this. I have searched and Googled awhole
bunch ... but can not find a date for when the rule took effect. I've
looked at meeting notes of owner's meeting but nothing.

I wonder if you wrote to Goodell's office if they could provide a
    reference.

Remember, Goodell said this rule isn't in the NFL rule book but in the NFL game operation manual. I've never seen anything credible showing that this is a new rule.

Patriots under investigation for following rules, guidelines violations ...
    1. Page 105 of the Game Operations manual says: "No video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game." It later says: "All video shooting locations must be enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead."

    2. And, a memo from Ray Anderson, NFL head of football operations, to head coaches and GMs on Sept. 6, 2006 said: "Video taping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent’s offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches’ booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game."

If they were caught in 2003, for instance, what would the repercussions have been?

The memo doesn't seem to say anything that the Game Operations manual doesn't already say. Certainly doesn't look like a new rule from that.

This sounds like the job for some hungry Pats beat reporter.

Imagine the story for that reporter who unearths the possibility that the rule the Pats dynasty is being accused of breaking didn't even exist during those super bowl wins ......
