Default The Disrespect Card

I don't know about anyone else, but I am sick & tired of the "Disrespect" card. I know in the 60'd & 70's I never heard an athlete use this term. But slowly & surely it crept like slime into the sports news. Whether it was over salary or another player disrespecting someone or someone's mother/brother/sister or whatever. The latest media assault on the perceived Patriots running up the score trend has really made me realize how sickening it is to hear a grown man and professional athlete talk about being disrespected.

I don't know who started it or why it started. I just know it's BS! I've been trying to pay attention to who the individual athletes are who are using the disrespect card. I'm trying to see if there are any similarities among them that may explain this trend of grown men who have no shame in crying publically. My personal belief is that the athletes using this term are the below average players who never made it to star level or maybe even first string. Basically, they feel disrespected in general because they feel they are better than what they are.

If anyone can shed any light on this subject or share you own theories, I'd love to hear them!

Big salaries develop big egos. Some players can't handle the deflation so they find someway to secure their egos by finding fault with the team that beat them. For example when a team loses a close game these people will claim to be the better team and that they should've won. When they lose by a large margin the other team is running up the score and dissing them. It's a no win situation. I would say it started with massively inflated salaries and a lack of focus towards scholastics in some colleges. Poor coaching might be another cause.

I guess with the huge over-inflated salaries they somehow thought fans would CARE if they were disrespected?

"Hey man, I'm making $5 mill a year, but those Patriots really, really disrespected me!"

It almost sounds like a jerky-boys clip!

"I was disrespected and now my feelings are very, very hurt!"

I can't believe the number of posts I've seen on opposing fan boards that discuss the terrible lack of respect the patriots have.

What they are really saying is "I'm so embaressed you kicked my ash!"

The word disrespect has become so common-place due to it's improper use...as in "man, you diss'd me". REAL disrespect used to be a big deal, now you can "dis" someone for just looking at them wrong.

So when I hear the cry babies talking about being "diss'd", who really cares? I think these guys often come from a culture where diss'n & being diss'd is an everyday occurance rather than the rare insult it used to be.

HOPE I DIDN'T DISS ANYONE!

Or it was just a SLOW NEWS WEEK. Seriously-all I heard that week on CNN and FOX News was Britney Spears, OJ, Lindsey Lohan, and various rap artists in trouble, blah, blah, blah.

Pathetic our society as a whole as gone down the tubes.

People put way too much into the mental aspect of the game. I don't mean knowledge, preparation, etc, that all is important. Mental strength playing in big games is important too. But a team being underdogs when they feel they shouldn't be makes them more likely to win because they feel disrespected? Give me a break. An untalented team is just as likely to lose as an untalented disrespected team. A talented team is just as likely to win as a talented disrespected team.

Its just something the media likes to talk about to hype games. Nothing more. Talent and coaching wins games.
