Dave Goldberg's right in that article. By the time he even comes up for induction, this will be an afterthought. It could be 15+ years before this even comes up, so who knows where half those writers will even be by then.
I like Belichick and everything he has done for this team. But what he did was way beyond stupid. He was warned by the league, warned at Green Bay and then told point blank by the Jets not to do this.
If he gets delayed into the HOF, that is his fault.
If other coaches are all doing the same thing, then they will get in trouble when they are caught. So far, Belichick let himself get caught because he pushes everything to the limit. That helps us win games, but it also has now cost this franchise and Belichick himself a pretty nasty penalty. Also a good reputation.
I am sure we will hear a bunch more ridiculous conspiracy theories from the usual suspects, but the bottom line is that any rational person can see that Belichick can only blame himself for this fiasco. And I for one am not really worried right now about whether it delays his entry into the HOF, I am more interested in winning more superbowls because now our past efforts are tainted in the eyes of the world.
If we win more superbowls and have a lot more success, this story will likely go away eventually and maybe not even delay his entry into the HOF.
So rather than worry about the distant future, the best thing to do now is continue winning games and superbowls.
There is no WAY Belichick will have to wait. He will DEFINITELY make it on his first ballot. And the writers who leave him off as one last dig - hiding behind "symbolic" and protest vote reasons - will be derided, as they should be. Hopefully by then ballots will be made public.

Not going to happen. This assures him of not getting in on the first vote. It's a lock.

The history of the game has the memory of an elephant.

Until I speak to every single voter on the panel and get an iron clad assurance from each one as to their vote, I guess I don't feel as confident as you in making that prediction. I think it has a lot to do with whether we continue to win, because if we don't win more superbowls, people are going to see a clear deliniation between pre- and post-spygate.
As far as being derided, I guess I would have to wonder "By who?" A bunch of crazed Pats fans? Don't we already deride the media every moment of every day? It hasn't done much good, has it? We can't even get decent coverage in the Boston area, so I am not sure where all our support is going to come from.
If Belichick does not win more superbowls, like two or three more, I am not going to bet money on him getting into the HOF first time out.

BULL*****. I understand the point you're making, but they can't POSSIBLY keep him out. He will retire as THE best coach in the history of the game. This thing will never completely leave him, I agree, but even in the span of 7 days the conventional wisdom on just how egregious the violation was has changed to an enormous degree.
Absolutely, positively NO CHANCE that he gets kept out on the first ballot. NONE.

Belichick will be a first ballot HoF, best coach of this generation. Part of 5 Super Bowl teams and counting. Built a dynasty. There's no way he's not first ballot. The people voting understand the media made a big deal out of nothing.
