I'm almost 100% sure that at least 1 owner did this, just to lower the cap numbers for his team...
Instead of paying the player their money, why not just "donate" the difference to the players "non-profit" organization... and pay them a little bit so it looks decent enough on the books.
That or just pay them under the table.
I'd be willing to bet that this type of thing already happened.
Or am I just too brilliant????

Sometimes I think that this paying under the table stuff might be true and a way to circumvent the salary cap. For example, sign Brady long term and Bob Kraft starts a stock portfolio that is not in his name and when he retires gives it to him.. or how about Troy Brown signs for the vet minimum, however Bob Kraft has arranged a deal when he retires he becomes spokesman for Banknorth for 5 years.
These guys know how to make money, and there are creative ways to circumvent the cap.. who would know???

Exactly... I bet this thing happens more than we realize; Enron style.
I guess it would surprise me only because the world, especially the NFL world, is so small that unless everyone was complicit, someone would find out and blow the whistle. And that would create a major poopstorm.
But WTF do I know.

Leave it to NE fan to conjure up a way to cheat and beat the system, and you wonder why people dislike you so much.
How about free lifetime supply of razors?
Right, and the Colts are so wholesome! They probably all go to church together and volunteer at the soup kitchen once a week, and of course none of those millionaire athletes would ever cheat on their taxes because their the goody goody boys! BS!

Hey, I never said that, but all the BS that comes out of that area of the country? It seems that nothing else matters but winning, regardless of how it is done. I was always taught to play fair. I don't subscribe to the theory of "if you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'".

Neither do I, but with all the scandals and crooks you read about in corporate America, and all the talk of how the NFL is big business, I could really care less about what happens behind the scenes, as long as their not bilking Joe Bluecollar on Sunday and it's all done to keep players on the roster. If Goodell ever cleans up the player ranks and wants to focus on this stuff then it'll be time for owners to face the music. IMO the big issue for the NFL that might be a big dark cloud is the one hovering over MLB. If Congress starts looking around in their dirty laundry, then everyone is in trouble. Shawn "Look At Me, I'm An Idiot" Merriman is just the tip of the iceberg.

Take it from me -- nor does Mr Kraft.
(I bet that from your high moral ground you must feel proud to have Bill Polian as your GM, don't you -- or is using the stadium loudspeakers to increase crowd noise not cheating?)
