Re: Adam Schefter on WEEI
Link? I heard him last night saying he didn't think the Skins were interested and he also didn't think he'd be traded because the Pat's would likely not take anything less than full franchise compensation. Of course he also said we were going to tender Welker. Sometimes the price Adam pays for his info appears to be agreeing to get a message out.
$6M AAV is a very fair offer for Asante, it's about $500K more than he'd get from me and probably around a million more than they were offering him last November. If course the devil is in the details, including bonus and guarantees. The bonus is likely still in the $10M+ range (which would be up $2.5M from their last offer and certainly elite in terms of this team where only Brady, Seymour and now Thomas have warranted double digit signing bonus) or he'd have leaked that too, and the guaranteed money is probably closer to $14M than $16M.
Judging from his own assessment of the gap between what he's hearing he's worth and what we're telling him he's worth, my guess is he wants closer to $7M with a lot more - at least a third and probably closer to 40-50% guaranteed ($14-18M). He seemed quite piqued about what Thomas got in comparison to what he was being offered.
I don't think they can bridge that kind of gap right now when they are already likely pretty close to their limit for what he's worth to this team at best. Especially where the signing/bonus money is concerned. Leaking the AAV is a way to alert other suitors that the Pat's believe he is worth at least this and it wouldn't take too much more for a suitor to sign him (provided they were anticipating paying a good chunk of the contract in guaranteed or bonus money for cap purposes anyway).
