The Patriots just announed three roster moves:

# Running back Corey Dillon was released by the team.

# Fullback Heath Evans was re-signed by the team.

# Offensive lineman Billy Yates was re-signed by the team.

Not unexpected. The last minute attempt to get something in trade for him was doomed since potential trading partners knew he would be released soon anyway.

Yup, thanks for the memories Corey. You had one great year and are in the Patriots record book, probably for a long time.

how does this affect the cap? Not sure how a release differs from a cut.

Same thing. "cut" is just a colloquial way of saying "released".

There was no last minute attempt to trade him except in SWelkers ill-conceived thread here last night. They told his agent a week ago they would release him on the 2nd, and they did. We save $1M on the cap, or more if we choose to split the dead cap hit, and we avoid paying him $5.5M this year in salary and option bonus.
