Default Blocking Scheme

Anyone else think the pats should explore moving to a zone blocking scheme ? Maroney seems to built for that kinda of a running scheme .

I think it's worth exploring.

One thing I noticed watching SB 36 last week was how often the Pats pitched the ball to Smith or Faulk. I wouldn't mind them trying that out with the zone blocking.

It would allow:

1. Maroney to get to the outside much quicker.
2. I believe it would keep his feet moving which is an issue when the defense gets quick penetration, he gets flat footed.
3. It would allow our TEs and smaller, quicker lineman the chance to take good angles, establish leverage and move defenders out of the way.
4. It should give a quick back like Maroney great cut back lanes.

There's only two conclusions for Patriots fans on rookies. They are either a bust or being fitted for their bust in Canton.

From Reiss's interview with BB:

""Sometimes on first and second down we lost yardage, and when you set up a long-yardage situation in the running game, you never want that to happen. It's one thing if you're sacked and it's second and 14, but when you hand off and it's second and 12, you can't let that happen."

Because of that, it would not be a surprise if the Patriots take a hard look at their scheme this offseason and consider alterations."

I agree with Mike Reiss.....with BB saying what he has..change is sure to follow.

i think that is a pretty good ideal to go after. i watched americas game aboutt he 98 broncos last night and TD tore up that season with over 2000 yards.

maroney just needs to get the train moving and get the legs going, find the hole and go full blast.

That's not how the Zone scheme works, though.
