Default No separation

Mark Schlereth on Mike & Mike this morning stated that the Patriots receivers were not getting separation from the Jets corners in man coverage on the Jets blitzes. He said that is why the Jets were able to get to and pressure Brady so often. I don't think I can even name any of their starters - Barret maybe one? If our receivers can't get open in single coverage, what does that mean for opposing defenses going forward? I would think that everyone is going to blitz Brady knowing they don't have to worry about getting burned. Or are the Jets DBs that good?

That is the fear, Indy did the same thing. Denver setup the blue print last year in the play-offs. The Pats have to start taking some shot deep to prevent the Safety from coming in full speed into the backfield unblocked.

It seems like play action and Jackson running a deep pattern is the answer but maybe I am making it too simple. Until the Patriots connect on a couple of deep balls we are going to see 8,9 men in the box and Brady under constant pressure. So much for the theory "You can't blitz Brady..."

The good news is we have 7 games to work this out, and field turf will help.

The scary part is that even after that long pass to Gaffney, the Jets kept bringing everyone untill the last play of the game.

My question on the game is how much did the field conditions have to do with this issue. If a QB can not scramble or move and Brady is the best at moving and avoiding, doesn't that mean it's easier to blitz?? I agree Denver did the same thing..I think the receivers were not ready at that time..were ready Sunday. but could not show much in the muck. Do they need to stretch the field?? Of course!! I just think conditions were that bad that made it a LOT worse than it would have been.

When you look at the number of completions Brady made plus the good number of incompletions where the WR was open, this isn't a concern for me. Having WR open wasn't the problem. Getting the ball to them (and holding onto it, Gabriel) after the catch were more of the issue.

Play-Action isn't going to help much if you're already getting single coverage. In fact, if the defense is committing to the blitz, then a slow-developing play like a run-fake is just going to get Brady sacked.

IMO, a big part of the problem is w/ the protection. All WRs need a little time to get separation -- if the Pats oline could pick up the blitzes a little better, Brady + the WRs might be able ot burn 'em.

This is why the shotgun/spread offense has been working well for us -- by spreading the defense out, it makes it easier for the line to identify the rush and makes their jobs a lot simpler. Thing is, if we want to stay comitted to the running game, we can't be in shotgun all the time.

Didn't BRady use more shotgun in earlier seasons when blitzed?

When is the last time the Pats used a screen pass to slow down the blitz?

Let's review the pass-rush play distribution for the New England Patriots offense in the last two games:

Patriots vs Colts
33 rushes vs 35 passes

Patriots vs Jets
25 rushes vs 37 passes

Now let's review the New York Jets rush defense this year:

Week 1 vs Tennessee

Titans Offense: 86 rushing yards on 25 carries

Week 2 vs New England

Patriots Offense: 147 rushing yards on 39 carries

Week 3 vs Buffalo

Bills Offense: 169 rushing yards on 31 carries

Week 4 vs Indianapolis

Colts Offense: 160 rushing yards on 36 carries

Week 5 vs Jacksonville

Jaguars Offense: 181 rushing yards on 39 carries

Week 6 vs Miami

Dolphins Offense: 129 rushing yards on 29 carries

Week 7 vs Detroit

Lions Offense: 125 rushing yards on 22 carries

Week 8 vs Cleveland

Browns Offense: 147 rushing yards on 39 carries

If that's not a swiss cheese run defense in the NFL than what is?

How is it that against the worst rush defenses in the NFL, the New England Patriots call far more pass plays than rush plays? This simply boggles the mind!

Perhaps a little more no-huddle offense would help the passing offense. Brady's concentration and execution seems to excel in hurry-up and no-huddle situations.
