Default Washington Breakdown

I'll get started sometime tomorrow.

The starters were in for awhile, so I'll probably take the first series and go from there.

Gotcha, take the 1st Qtr, I'll work on the 2nd.

This should be a fun game to breakdown! I thought Vrabel looked AWESOME on defense, like he was trying to upstage Seau a bit. Nothing like some good competition in the middle. Rodney looked a bit tenative, which you might expect. He didn't take his late shots like he usually does right as the whistle is blowing, but my wife was about ready to cry about seeing him back on the field. Wright looked great, and fought thru a double team or two.

What can you say about the O-Line? AWESOME. This will probably be Watson's easiest game of the year, but with Brown as our only WR option of note, he'll get his chances. Caldwell??????????????????

I hope Cobbs makes the damn roster.

First Half

Kickoff: Maroney from the NE 5, 36 yd return, Maroney works off Sanders and Alexander blocks along the sideline but FUMBLES at NE 41, ball out of bounds.

Offensive Series #1 Field Goal

Contributor: Pats1
Time: 15:00 remaining in the first quarter
Statistics: 11 plays (5 run, 5 pass, 1 field goal), 54 yards (12 run, 30 pass, 12 penalty), time of possession was 6:26
Breakdown: 3 green plays (0 run, 2 pass, 1 field goal) for 15 yds., 4 black plays (3 run, 1 pass) for 13 yds. (9 run, 4 pass), 4 red plays (2 run, 2 pass) for 4 yds. (3 run, 2 pass)., 12 penalty yards gained for the Patriots.

1st and 10 NE 41

Result: Run, Dillon, up the middle, 3 yds.
Offense: 2 WR, Caldwell wide left, Troy tight right, 2 TE, Watson in motion right wing to RG and back, Graham down off RT, Dillon lone RB.
Defense: 4-3, LBs shaded defensive left, FS comes up late showing blitz, SS drops off after Watson motion, both CBs 10 yards off.
Blocking: Light seals the backside against the RDE Carter
Mankins pulls right and knocks the blitzing FS Taylor out of the hole
Koppen turns left to take on the RDT Salave’a but is trampled from behind by Neal
Neal drives the LDT Killings left but into Koppen
O’Callaghan bulldozes the LDE Wynn left and out of the hole
Graham gets physical with the MLB Marshall ahead of the run, but doesn’t get a good angle
Watson initially seals off the SLB Washington on the right edge but the SLB slides downfield and breaks free just as Dillon is being brought down
Brown races inside but runs into Mankins and the FS

Analysis: The blitzing FS added another man into the box (albeit just before the snap). Mankins did a great job of clearing Taylor out of the hole as he came on strong, but the backside of the hole was open, allowing the WLB to come in and make a solo tackle on Dillon before he could break into the secondary.

2nd and 7 NE 44

Result: Pass, Brown from Brady, quick out, 1 yd.
Offense: 3 WR, Caldwell wide left, Brown left slot, Stone wide right, TE Watson down off RT, Faulk lone RB offset left.
Defense: 4-2-5 nickel, FS in box 5 yards off Watson, NB showing blitz left wing, both CBs 10 yards off.
Blocking: Light stands up the RDE
Mankins sits back in reserve after the RDT slants defensive left
Koppen takes a step right before the RDT bounces off and pursues the catch
Neal and O’Callaghan double the LDT
LDE drops into coverage
Coverage: Watson works through a jam by the LDE and into the seam
Faulk steps into blitz protection but NB Prioleau turns around on the throw
Stone does a 10 yard hitch
Caldwell clears out deep, but doesn’t draw the RCB Rogers or SS Archuleta
Brown does a quick out, catches it cleanly, but can’t break away from the DBs coming down hard

Analysis: Washington read this play like a book – there’s not much more to it. The pocket was clean but Troy was quickly engulfed by the RCB and SS. If it was man coverage, the story would have been different and Caldwell would have drawn the RCB off the line, but there was no blocking for someone like Archuleta.

3rd and 6 NE 45

Result: Pass, Brown from Brady, crossing pattern, 14 yds.
Offense: Shotgun 3 WR, Caldwell wide left, Brown right slot, Stone wide right, TE Watson standing right wing, Faulk RB to left of Brady in shotgun.
Defense: 3-3-5 nickel, SLB tight over Watson, WLB showing blitz over LT, all 3 CBs press coverage.
Blocking: Light rides the RDE outside
Mankins stands up the NT
Koppen sits back in reserve before helping out Neal
Neal stands up the LDE initially but is turned outside and falls to his knees, where Koppen steps in
O’Callaghan rides the blitzing SLB outside
Coverage: Faulk steps up through the line before dancing underneath the WLB and MLB
Watson does a slightly deeper crossing pattern than Brown, clearing out the SS
Caldwell beats the jam outside and goes up the sideline against the RCB
Brown beats the NB jam inside, cutting behind the WLB zone and beating the NB across the middle
Stone goes up the sideline against the LCB

Analysis: Brown found the void between the LB and safety zones, and got help from Watson on a similar pattern to stretch out the SS and somewhat the FS. All Brown had to do was cut across to beat the NB playing the outside, and Brady hit him from a clean pocket for the first down.

I was wary about O'Callaghan but early in this breakdown and my observations during the game lead me to be very optimistic about his play. I saw him really dominate LE Wynn for more than a few plays during Saturdays game.

From the breakdown it seems that Neal can't get out of his own way.
Am I wrong?

He had problems keeping his feet last year, but looked better against Arizona last week.

1st and 10 Was 41

Result: Run, Dillon, right tackle, 1 yd.
Offense: WR Caldwell left, 2 TE, Graham down off RT, Watson down right wing, I-form backfield with Mills at FB and Dillon at RB.
Defense: 4-3, FS and LCB in box off right wing, SS comes up showing blitz over left wing, RCB 5 yards off Caldwell.
Blocking: Light overpursues across the WLB but turns back and gets a quick arm wrap
Mankins stands up the RDT on the nose but doesn’t have an angle and the RDT breaks free
Koppen cuts down the MLB in the second level
Neal pulls right but dives straight over the ducking CB trying to contain the edge
O’Callaghan drives the LDT left and releases when the angle is lost to prevent a hold
Graham gets driven back slightly by the LDE but battles to a stalemate
Watson chips the LDE before standing the SLB straight up on the edge
Mills doesn’t push the hole hard enough to prevent the FS from scraping off and getting Dillon

Analysis: The blocking and hole was there, but indecision on the part of Mills lead to Dillon sticking too long in the backfield. Mills took too many sidesteps working behind Graham, and also got caught up with the Watson/SLB block, but didn’t attack the hold hard enough after that. Instead of Mills leading Dillon through the hole, it was nearly the opposite. To make matters worse, Mills panicked after getting caught up with Watson and cut in front of Dillon to dive on the FS Taylor. If he had let Dillon keep his momentum on an unhindered path, there was a good chance Dillon could have broken past Taylor.

2nd and 9 Was 40

Result: PENALTY on NE-R.O'Callaghan, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 40 - No Play.
Offense: 2 WR, Brown wide left, Caldwell wide right, TE Graham down off LT, FB Mills strong side, Dillon RB.
Defense: 3-4, CB on Brown press coverage, CB on Caldwell 10 yards off.

Analysis: The RDT actually made the first move, starting forward but quickly moving back, triggering O’Callaghan on the opposite end of the line to stand up and drive forward.

2nd and 14 Was 45

Result: Pass, Watson from Brady, 5 yard in, 4 yds.
Offense: Shotgun 4 WR, Dillon wide left, Brown left slot, Graham right slot, Caldwell wide right, TE Watson standing left wing.
Defense: 3-4 nickel, SLB 5 yards off Graham, WLB 5 yards off Brown, both CBs 10 yards off, FS comes in to MLB on adjustments before backing off.
Blocking: Light rides the RDE outside
Mankins slides behind Light in reserve
Koppen lets the NT spin into Neal and bounce back, where Koppen stands him up
Neal chips the NT before sliding outside in reserve
O’Callaghan rides the LDE outside
Coverage: Dillon clears out the RCB deep
Brown hooks against man coverage from the WLB
Watson goes half speed towards the idle RILB before quickly cutting underneath
Graham goes deep on the SLB, who sees the pass and breaks off to make the tackle
Caldwell clears out the LCB deep

Analysis: Watson hit openfield after breaking past the RILB, but the SLB kept an eye on Brady instead of committing to Graham up the seam and broke off nicely to make the warp-up tackle.

3rd and 10 Was 41

Result: Pass, Caldwell from Brady, Incomplete, 20 yard crossing pattern, pass dropped upon hit.
PENALTY on WAS-C.Rogers, Defensive Pass Interference, 17 yards, enforced at WAS 41 - No Play.
Offense: Shotgun 3 WR, Caldwell wide left, Brown left slot, Stone motion wide right inside 3 paces, TE Watson down off RT, Faulk RB to right of Brady in shotgun.
Defense: 3-3-5 nickel, NB 5 yards off Brown, RCB 10 yards off Caldwell, LCB showing blitz right wing.
Blocking: Light rides the RDE outside
Mankins and Koppen double the NT
Neal and O’Callaghan double the LDE
Watson picks up the edge blitz by the LCB
Faulk lowers into the blitzing SLB but the SLB keeps his footing and pressures Brady
Coverage: Caldwell does a 20 yard square-in but is hit from behind by the RCB as the pass comes in
Brown cuts underneath the NB and downfield
Stone goes deep on the LCB

Analysis: Stone was motioned inside when the LCB showed blitz, but Watson ended up picking it up as Stone went out on a route. Faulk had a good approach on his blitz pickup, but the SLB pulled to the side at the last second before heading straight for Brady, who got the pass off and on-target. The pass came into Caldwell’s numbers, but the RCB Rogers hit Caldwell from behind while knocking Caldwell’s arms down from the side, drawing the flag.
