Q: How do you feel overall about the depth on the roster here right now? (Felgie)
BB: This is the first week of August. It's a competitive camp. I think it's a competitive camp
Q: Just looking at it on paper... (Felgie again attempting to hype the Chicken Littles)
BB: What difference does it make? What is paper? You're going to put my
paper out there against Buffalo's paper? It doesn't mean anything. Depth
is what you have in October, November and December. That is what depth
is. Depth in May, depth in July, what difference does it make? The guys
we have, we're trying to get better. We have a lot of people we're
trying to evaluate. We'll do what we can do to put the best team out
there and pick the players that we think give us the best chance to win.
That's all this process is a part of. I don't think depth in July means
anything. I don't think depth in May means anything. Depth in November,
December, that's when you either have it or don't have it.
Q: One year, weren't your fifth and sixth linebackers Ted Johnson and
Rosevelt Colvin? You look at it now and it's not quite the same. Is it
more work building that depth in this camp?
BB: It varies from position to position. You look at the offensive and
defensive lines, if you go back two or three years, I don't think you'd
be saying... again in those units, what you're saying about them is what
you would be saying about them now. That's part of the transition of the
team. Year to year, it's never going to be the same. Again, I don't
think really right now is any time to even try to evaluate that. We have
a lot of young players. We have some new players on the team and who
knows where they're going to be in a month from now. They might look
pretty good or they might not. We'll know a lot more about what kind of
team we have in four or five weeks than we know now. That's no secret.
Guys can come a long way in the course of training camp and a lot of
players that we're not even talking about that could end up being
significant factors on the team. I don't know how you could possibly
evaluate that now and I wouldn't really try to evaluate it. We're just
trying to get everybody better and get everybody an understand of what
they're doing and start to evaluate them and start to work them into
system and figure out where their different roles could fall as they
perform and establish something for themselves, and the we'll make those
roster decisions in about a month from now. At least that's the way I
see it.

In other words, BB is taking action to resolve and improve the situation which at this time is way too early to stratify.
Think about this before posting the next panic thread. This is a major reason I don't do season's prognostications until after the last pre-season game when the rosters are set and the summer injury season for us and the enemy is clearer.

Someone needs to ask him, he says they dont have phifer's and all those guys as depth players..did he even know mike vrabel until 2001 ? now those guys are indespensible, how would you know depth unless you know how they perform ?
Its just him trying to make news and turning into the borges personality.
Eric Alexander, Freddie Roach and Pierre Woods have all looked very good in camp so far from my point of view. Dont be surprised to see one them really contribute to this team this year.

OK. I'll take input from fans actually at camp over 'analysis' from Felgie, Cafardo and their ilk.

Good post! Talked about this quote exactly on our show last night. Long way to go before anything is "determined".
BB: "... You look at the offensive and
defensive lines, if you go back two or three years, I don't think you'd
be saying... again in those units, what you're saying about them is what
you would be saying about them now." ...
This is a rarity.
To me, Coach is saying, our OL and DL are much better than our Ols and DLs who won Super Bowls.
Since team performance always begins ... and often ends ...
at the line of scrimmage,
it would seem that BB is somewhat as optimistic about this season as we are.
The only reason BB even bothers with a press conference, is because he is obliged to conduct one.
On the other hand, why reporters bother to attend one and, even sillier, ask him questions, remains a mystery.
“I’m for doing what’s best for the football team. If it’s carry four quarterbacks like we did in 2000, then we’ll carry four quarterbacks. If it’s carry seven offensive linemen, which we did at one point last year, then we’ll carry seven offensive linemen. In one game we had 11 linebackers active for a game. That might be an NFL record.”
For a coach who is notoriously tight-lipped, he is very quotable.
