Default The Forgotten One

A lot of praise has been given to BB and Scott Pioli over the past

few years for their success in producing the Patriot's dynasty. Their

best decision was the selection of Tom Brady in the sixth round of

the 2000 draft. What we may have forgotten is the person who lobbied

so hard for them to draft Tom, Dick Rehbein. Dick knew that Tom was

going to be something special. Without Dick there may have been no

dynasty.

Here here!

I wonder if there's a Dick Rehbein award that could be created... I'd say it shoud go to an exec who makes a savvy move like that but today's front office hero could be tomorrow's Bobby Grier (sorry Bobby...)

Perhaps its just a Coach/Scout of the Year Award for the Patriots organization... I assume Rehbein is a fitting choice for such an posthumous honor, though all I know about him is that his players spoke highly of him as a QB coach, and of course, he made a VERY good draft recommendation.

I'd expect he had to also fight hard to make sure the team kept Brady on the active roster that year as well, carrying 4 QBs knowing full well how that would impact team depth in 2000.

I believe he was the quaterback coach in 2001 when we won the superbowl. I recall he died during training camp that year.

You make a very good point. I'm sure Scott and Bill would say the same if we were able to ask them. And I've heard Tommy say how much Dick helped him develop.

Unfortunately, I think we fans and the press so forget. Thanks for reminding us.

Dunno, personally I'd hate to receive the "Dick Rehbein award".

Alright I remember him a bit now that somebody mentions him, the guy before Hufnagel... I still never thought he was anything special though. And I find it hard to believe a positional coach has much input on draft picks.

They have considerable input. Dick talked BB into taking Brady vs some other QB stump whom I forget. If you read the Pats books, BB insists that everyone analyze film and players and produce opinions. Defensible opinions backed by citing facts, examples and defending their point of view under critical analysis.

I take it you're being facetious because of the name "Dick"?

Like I said I don't know much more about the guy aside from the fact that BB & Tom Brady have both waxed poetic about what he meant to them and the team, so they might tend to disagree with you that getting an award named in Dick Rehbein's honor is something to be avoided.
