Default Complacency

I had a very hard time waiting for the Jets game after all the trash talking. (I was also expecting Pats to win.) As I rallied my posse to come over to watch the game (away games only, in stadium for home games!), I was met with excuse after excuse.
- kids soccer game, golfing, etc

These are supposed to be hard core fans too, who go to many games with me. I am disgusted.

Anyone else sensing serious complacency? Or are my friends just lame?

Angry in Acton

You're angry and disgusted because your friends spent time with their family or being outdoors on one of the last days of summer over watching a football game? I like football as much as the next guy, but I think your priorities are a bit out of whack, as are your hyperbolic reactions. But this is from a guy who missed the first hour of the game riding his bike on a beautiful day, so I'm biased.

you sound like my wife. maybe you should go on long bike rides together!

seriously, i can live with my need to watch the game. i've waited since december for this.

i am also wondering why my friends used to NOT miss a single game during the 14-2 years.

Might I suggest TiVo? That way you can spend the day with wifey biking, golfing or what have you then come home and watch the game without commercial interruption. I guarantee she'll be hot for ya too and you can put that extra hour you saved to work for you!

It was a beautiful day. That's why I got up early, made the kids oatmeal, got to the zoo by 9:30 am, kids went on some rides, went to the playground, and by 12:30 they were eating pizza and then had ice cream cones. Zipped back home and sat in my chair with a six-pack at 12:56 while the kids' beautiful day continued.

You can have both!!!

Make it a family affair. On Sundays my wife and daughter go with me to the sports bar where we meet up with other transplanted New Englanders and cheer the Pats on. I guess I am lucky that I have a wife that likes football. She grew up a Rams fan (my father-in-law had Rams season tickets since 1958). When the Rams left for St. Louis, my wife adopted the Patriots as her team. This made SB36 doubly sweet. I have a oldstyle leather helmet with Pat Patriot on it and my daughter likes to wear it when we go to the sports bar. We have a tradition where after a Patriot TD, my daughter goes around the bar wearing the helmet and all Patriot fans tap the helmet. Makes it fun for everybody. She was complaining in 2007 of headaches after the games though.

I hope you don't have any guns. If you do, and get angry at me, I live in Rhode Island. Look for me there, not north of Boston.

Really.

That’s what we always do, and I think the last nine years we’ve put a pretty competitive team out there on the field every year. I think that’s how you do it – you get good football players. Sometimes they are not always at the No. 1 position, but I don’t think you pass up good football players to get the guys who aren’t as good just because they’re at a position that somebody feels you need.”
