Default Does Vollmer look better than Light?

Tell me if my eyes are deceiving me but I thought on the few plays that Vollmer replaced Light, he looked a LOT better against the pass rush and speed rushers. He did a good job of keeping guys off Brady. Light may have more experience but I think that Vollmer has him beat in terms of athleticism, length, and protecting the QB on passing downs. I think the only reason he didn't play more is cos he's a rookie. But he looked better than Light in limited reps. Now someone go ahead say that I'm wrong. LOL.

PS I'm talking specifically about the Buffalo game. I remember Light being pulled at once point and Vollmer inserted in his place.

i don't remember Vollmer being in there for more than a series when Light screwed up at the beginning of the game. But i was only looking at him to replace light at Left Tackle. If he was anywhere else on the line i missed it.

Yup it was at LT. He looked good there. Didn't make any mistakes that I remember and he stuffed the passrusher he was matched up against.

Not a large enough sample to make any definitive judgments.

Physically, Vollmer is the best lineman on the team. He is going to look generally better on easy mental assignments than most other players. In a head to head comparison with Light, Vollmer wins on frame, wingspan, kickslide, acceleration, power, and footwork. Light wins on experience, balance, and hand technique. He is going to need to develop his hand techniques and balance a bit before he beats out Light, but that is a question of when not if.

I'm certain he's going to be, but how could we tell? He's had six snaps!

First, this is the first thread I have ever followed up on with Light as the topic. I just posted a thread on him a couple days ago and most of these issues were covered. Vollmer DID look good on the ONE pass attempt he was in for....but they had little Maybin against him, who looked JV in size comparison. Light had a bad game, bad enough for ME to notice, lol. What I noticed too is how badly he did on the right side of the line. He wont be switching over there EVER, so its sink of swim at LT. The fact that Vollmer made it on the field that many snaps in his first game as a rookie says the coaches have to like what they see in practice. If you watch his plays again, there was only 1 running play to his side so there is no way to guage the sample. My bet he will be the star of this year's draft class.

Balance and hand technique don't mean much if you can't keep the defender away. Light is slow. I have been watching Vollmer quite a bit in preseason and the first game. He looks good. And he has the psycho attitude most real good OT's need to thrive.

about this specifically, bill spoke on it; something about Light being 'eligible' for a play meant he couldn't immediately go back to the line?
