Default '09 refs' point of emphasis: offensive holding

Just saw an NFLN feature on officials prepping for the season. Head of officials Mike Pereira said offensive holding will be a "point of emphasis" this season. So, expect more flags for 10-yarders. Sucks for a team that passes as much as we do.

It was funny when Pereira said, "Anyone that scores lower on this test than Matt Millen is fired."

I'll bet he was only half joking.

I guess it's a good thing Tommy has a quick release...

Truth. More leveling of the playing field imo

I expect a lot of quick routes and screens this year from the Pats, so it may not have nearly the huge negative impact that we predict.

Both Brady and Manning are quick release guys. Sucks for the Jets rookie Sanchez. Oh wait, NY teams don't get holding calls. My bad.

There is nothing more arbitrary in football than a holding penalty.

Despite the Pats' reputation in the media of being a pass-happy offense, they only ranked 12th in the NFL in 2008 in number of pass attempts - behind teams like Jacksonville, Kansas City, and Tampa Bay.
2008 NFL passing stats

Even in 2007 when the Pats were supposedly constantly running up the score and passing on every snap, they ranked fifth in number of pass attempts.

At first glance it looks to me like the Saints and Cardinals are the teams that could be hurt the most by this change of emphasis on offensive holding. I also agree the quick release passers such as Manning and Brady may not be affected as much as guys that try to buy time scrambling like Roethlisberger.

But the difference between 2nd and 5th was 4 total pass attempts over the course of the whole season (586 to 590)....IIRC they would run the ball on almost entire drives in the second half of games to burn clock....I'd like to see first half of games comparisons for '07.
