That would be dumb of them. By rescinding the tender they get nothing - not even a comp pick. In that senario, why not just take what you can get? Even if it is just a 2nd rounder.

Either way, Peppers is in the drivers seat. Sure, he is limited to teams that can offer compensation to Carolina. But he is still in control.

I agree that it seems as though Peppers is in the drivers seat. As such, what if he isn't accommodating to teams contract offerings and is willing to wait the Panthers out so that they have no choice but to let him walk?

I could just as easily flip it around and ask: who says the Panthers aren't willing to deny a trade so that Peppers has "no choice" but to return to Carolina for 2009.

Isn't that what Asante did in 2007? He held out. The Pats called his bluff. He came back for the year.

They could I suppose but the reason why I asked about the Panthers cap situation was to determine if that possibility was likely. Given that they are seemingly cap crippled at the moment, as a result of keeping Peppers' almost $17M on the books, they might not be so willing to continue on. Not if it means they lose out on signing/keeping other players that they might wish to add/keep.

Meanwhile Peppers can sit back and wait knowing that he's got almost $17M coming to him if the Panthers don't blink.

I am so sick of reading this type. The Panthers would never ever do that, they can't. The reason ANY BONUS would be immediately added on to the Panthers cap. The real way it goes Peppers signs the tag and then is traded, the team who gets him the signs him to a new deal.

Can somebody remind me how we know that they would forfeit the comp pick?

Is it in the CBA?

Or has this happened before and the team involved failed to get a compensatory pick?

It doesn't make much sense to me that a team should lose its comp pick because the player refused to sign the tender.

I'm still wondering who is with me that thinks the Panthers might well end up having to rescind the tag when all is said and done?

I just wonder how many teams realistically have a shot at meeting not just the Panthers trade demands but also Peppers preferred team and salary demands? Yes, I know that Carolina could trade Peppers to any team for any pick so long as that team is willing/able to absorb the tag amount of $17M but how many teams will want to pay that amount of money and give up a pick for what would be an obviously disgruntled Julius Peppers? It's not like the Cassel case where he was tickled pink just to have hit the lottery. I would think not many teams would be interested so the longer this plays out the worse it'll be on the cap strapped Panthers who can't even go about assembling a team next year because they are carrying almost $17M of cap charge for a player that they aren't even planning on having on the team next year!

I think Peppers and his agent might well be working towards waiting the Panthers out on this one believing that the Panthers will have no choice (if they wish to be active signing needed players) but to remove the tag.

At least if Carrucci's info is correct, the Pats and Peppers' have mutual interest in each other and have presumably talked numbers such that they can quickly swoop in should it happen as such.

Panthers fan here. Let me start by saying that yes, we are bumping the ceiling on the cap, so we could use some relief. That relief would be there without Peppers. That being said, the Panthers are fully committed to keeping Peppers unless a good trade appears. That 2nd rounder is not a good trade, they won't move on that, they value him too much. Throw in that 23 pick and we're talkin'.

Most of the fans are ready to throw him out for a jar of mayo, but they're thinking emotionally and the team is not doing that. They'll release another player/restructure some contracts to get the money they need before they will let Peppers go below his value.

Peppers doesn't want to be there, but he'll play. At 29 it would be career suicide to sit out...

Count me in. $16.7M is a breathtaking amount to pay for a player for just one year who doesn't even want to play for your team. The Panthers are strong enough financially that they can decide to do this. But if the Patriots were in an identical situation, I'd just be hoping to maximize our trade compensation.

Of course the Panthers are going to say they intend to keep Peppers. Even a hint that they intend to rescind the tender would instantly destroy most of Peppers' trade value.

I agree with the Panthers fan that Peppers will sign his tender. But he'll probably wait until close to the regular season to do so. And it won't be a fun ride for the Panther's management or fans until he does.
