[FREUD ALERT?] “Even though we’re three, we could be at 23,” Pioli said.
OK, so in a transcript of Pioli talking at the Combine from the KC Star, Scott said this:
Quote:
“Even though we’re three, we could be at 23,” Pioli said Saturday at the NFL scouting combine. “Even though you’re at 23, you could be at three. The draft strategy is know the entire board, know all the players, know there might be opportunities to manipulate the draft board, moving up or down, and gain draft picks or give away draft picks to get veteran players. … The whole thing is very fluid.
Alrighty, did he pick #23 randomly out of the sky, or is this a hint/slip-up?
I didn't see anyone else mention this, so pardon me if it was covered in some "Everyone Loves Matty" thread.

Good find!
Reading the article, I get the impression a reporter prefaced his question with a reference to New England's past draft day trades...arguably that brings NE into the discussion leading to the #23 remark. Though it does make one rub his hands with greed pondering a swap of first round picks and the potential of taking a top LT/WR/LB in this draft.

Fixed your post for you.

Pioli: Cassel “hasn’t signed” franchise tender
Written by Andy Hart on February 21, 2009 – 4:06 pm -
After initially declining to discuss Matt Cassel in his Saturday afternoon press conference at the Combine, Chiefs GM Scott Pioli addressed Cassel’s current status. Despite previous published reports indicating that Cassel had both accepted and signed the $14.65 million franchise tender, Pioli said he did not believe that to be the case at this point.
“He’s hasn’t signed. You can’t trade for a player that’s not signed under contract,” Pioli responded to a K.C. writer’s question about the possibility of a trade for Cassel. ”That’s my understanding. I haven’t looked into it far enough. But I believe he hasn’t signed…I don’t think…I think two or three franchise players have signed. I don’t think he has, I don’t think.”
Lots of interesting comments from SP today.

LBs can be gotten throughout the draft. Premium LOTs and Richard Seymours require top 10 picks. The Pats are seldom there. When they are, you take the Big Uglies. As Bill says "...God made only so many fast, quick, big men...".

I'd be happy with that too, but #3 got more interesting with the Jason Smith/Monroe battles added to Crabtree and Curry.
