With all due respect, I fail to understand why there is a Jewish Sports HOF... one's religion has little to nothing to do with sports. Is there a Christian's Sports HOF, or a Muslim's Sports HOF?
Again, not making a judgment, as much as wondering what I missed.
regardless, congrats to Tippett!

If being a jew were only about one's faith, I would agree. It's more complicated than that. Judiasm existed prior to the predominance of western civilization, so it's very hard to ascribe western concepts such as race, ethnicity, and faith to judiasm. They are all kind of jumbled together in a way that's tough for someone from a western religion to entirely understand.
The underlying tenants of judiasm regard its members -- whether by birth or conversion -- as akin to members of a nation. Put another way, Judiasm does not really recognize a distinction between faith and ethnicity. Predominantly western religions, however, do. So, one can define oneself as a christian and a person, of, for example, romanian descent or Mexican descent, etc. Not really so with a jew, although a jew also will self identify with their country of birth.
So, the point is, when someone is or becomes a jew, and says, "I'm a jew," there's a part of that statement that's saying "I believe in the jewish faith," but also part of that statement that is analagous to saying "I'm a russian."
You could have a russian hall of fame. Or a New Jersey hall of fame. Or something like that, so, given the way Judiasm DEFINES ITSELF, it is entirely appropriate to have a jewish hall of fame. Christians don't define themselves this way. By definition, this would be somewhat antithetical to the entire Christian movement at least since the time of Constantine. But, if they did, I would think a Christian sports hall of fame would make sense. Then again, a Christian hall of fame doesn't really seem necessary, since it would pretty much just be made up of 98 percent of the people in the regular sports hall of fames anway, wouldn't it?

Or it can be as simple as being born from a Jewish mother and living happily ever after - reformed or non practicing and enjoying the traditions. It is what it is and whatever one wants to make of it.
Most important - CONGRATS Andre!!!

LOVE New England sports....10 years SEVEN championships!!!
First comment: I'm surprised there are 7 Jews that deserve hall of fame entry total, never mind this year alone. I also find it hilarious that so many of the entrants are non-athletes. Only Jews would have a majority of media and agents in a "sports" hall of fame.
To answer the question regarding the need of this HOF, I don't see anything wrong with any minority group (we're loud, but there are only 13 million of us in the world) celebrating the achievements of one's own. I really wouldn't be surprised to hear about a Muslim (not that that's a minority) or Mormon hall of fame, nor would I think anything was wrong with it.
More to the point, this issue is much like the question of is it "right" to have African American fraternities or college funds when there do not exist "white" versions of these. The answer is simple: there was a time when all of these groups were de facto (or even de jure) for whites only and it made sense to have organizations supporting those who could not get mainstream support. These groups served to support those affected by racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, etc. Same with gay pride parades. Yes, one could argue that there are not Straight Pride parades, but others could argue that all parades that excluded gays were in effect Straight Pride. You could bring up other examples pertaining to women and virtually every other sub group of culture, I think. Are these organizations that represent minorities supposed to dissolve just because the majority slowly makes ammends and become less exclusive? Maybe this is a little political, but anyway that is how this is justifiable to me.
Although for those that want to know the real answer, it's because Jews suck at sports and we want to simultaneously make ourselves feel better about this and distract the world with our sports accomplishments while running the media and world bank.
