Default Breer: on the coaching carousel

Interesting read on the coaching turnover. Including some comments from Belichick.

Thats a really poor insinuation in that article: IE teams do well because of coaching continuity.

The relationship of the data is in the opposite direction: Coaches that do well keep their jobs.
Dungy, Bellichick, etc, are all still coaching the same team because they keep winning, not the other way around.

Good coaching/success lead to continuity. Continuity doesn't necessarily lead to success (see Millen, Matt)

BB:
"When you have that kind of continuity, it helps the drafting process because your scouts know exactly what each position's requirements are," Belichick said. "You don't have to worry about every two years changing coordinators. (The Steelers) are very consistent, so I think that helps the drafting and the player acquisition process. It helps the execution from the guys who are doing, doing it repetitively and doing it with the same people."

Amen.

Stats Cited:
"In the first half of this decade, from 2000-04, 35 head coaches were hired to cure all that ailed a franchise. The results were predictable.

Eight remain, a group that includes Super Bowl champions like Bill Belichick, Tony Dungy, Jon Gruden and Tom Coughlin. But many more got off to rough starts, or couldn't sustain early success, and were subsequently fired.

Of the aforementioned 35 coaches, 15 were fired within three years and nine were out within two.

At least seven teams will head into 2009 with new head coaches. Fifteen more have coaches installed in the last three years." End quote
