The one time they threw deep Gafney had beaten the coverage. The Colts had only 3 CBs dressed and one was on the street three days earlier. In that situation, it is dumb not to test out that secondary. Every long pass doesn't have to be good. But the threat of a long ball opens up the short stuff. Even if it doesn't work.
That's why you keep running the ball even if you only get 2 yards a pop. The threat of a run keeps the defense for keying on passes.
You HAVE to have a balance. A one dimensional team in today's NFL is a losing team.
It was one thing weeks 1-4 when Cassel was getting the feel of the pocket, etc. He has shown he can throw down field, and if we go into the Bills game with the same plan the result will be the same.
I know Mo has the quick answer of you can't go downfield every time, but I'm not suggesting that. I'm saying you need a balance.
As far as seeing more than an OC, what do you need to see not to try to run a draw against the fastest defense in the NFL. They have a light fast line, we have big heavy line and runner and blockers.
Sometimes OCs outsmart themselves. "They'll never expect this." No, JM, they won't. They don't think anyone would be so stupid as to run that.
No one is perfect. We all make mistakes. If you never make any mistakes, you are playing too safe and need to find the limits of what you can do.
But you need to learn from mistakes. That's why I'm hoping JM is smarter that you give him credit for. I'm hoping he will review and see what worked and what didn't and figure out why.
And do something different.
