The Boston Globe reported on Saturday that Patriots linebacker Shawn Crable will be promoted from the practice squad to the active roster for tomorrow’s game, citing an NFL source.

Crable will be filling runningback Kevin Faulk’s roster spot, and the fact he’s being promoted at all is pretty encouraging considering what a disaster this year’s training camp ended up being for the former third round draft choice.

After spending the better part of his first two seasons on injured reserve, expectations were high for him coming into camp this season. Unfortunately Crable reportedly failed his conditioning test, which initially saw him placed on Active PUP just before the start of training camp. Instead that appeared to be the last straw, and Belichick never gave him the chance to make it back and decided to release him before camp started.

“We didn’t pass him on the physical, and just didn’t feel like he was ready to compete and participate right now,” said Belichick the day after Crable was cut back on July 29th.

“That’s all part of the physical,” Belichick replied when asked by a reporter if Crable’s physical included the conditioning test “There’s a physical, and there’s being in condition – that’s all inclusive.”

Belichick later told reporters that he’d be willing to give Crable another shot, but only if he could prove he was healthy, saying “If Shawn physically is healthy, he would have a good chance to compete on the field based on what we saw coming out of college, and the limited opportunities that we’ve seen to evaluate him in the last two years. But right now I just don’t think he’s there.”

Crable’s name wasn’t mentioned again and he surprised everyone when he was later added to the practice squad.

Now he’s been promoted to the active roster, which is an opportunity to prove that he can be the player the team had hoped for when they selected him two years ago. The newspaper points out that Crable will likely play primarily on passing downs to try to help generate a pass rush.
