Another Interesting Day Two For the Patriots

Raise your hand if you would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in the ‘war room’ during today’s draft selections.

New England continued doing exactly what fans have come to expect, and that’s completely ignoring players that fans were salivating over, and instead going with guys who apparently were at the top of their board in value even though it doesn’t initially make a lot of sense to those who were hoping they would make at least one attempt to bolster their pass rush.

With Leigh Bodden coming back next season – presumably healthy – most thought that the Patriots were deep at the cornerback position opposite Devin McCourty, and with Kyle Arrington and Darius Butler they seemed to have four quality guys that had them fairly deep at that position.

Fans were clammoring for a defensive lineman.  Instead, they got another cornerback.

New England opened day two by taking Ras-I Dowling out of Virginia, who at 6-1 ½, 198 pounds gives them a taller presence on the outside, which is one disadvantage they’ve had against some of the bigger receivers.  The question really is with two guys who you would think would be slated to start on the outside in Bodden in McCourty, where are they going to use him?

He’s thought to be good in press coverage, but Dowling admitted to reporters he played primarily on the outside and didn’t get any slot corner experience in college.  So if the plan is to use him there, any experience he does get will be while under the tutelage of Bill Belichick.  He says he’s willing to play special teams, and feels it’s an important part of his game.

“Very important,” said Dowling when asked how important that part of his game was. “I think special teams is a big part [of the game] and really game-changing plays. I just continue to buy into special teams and I really believe that’s the way of winning.”

Listening to his conference call he’s also a very religious and respectful person, and much like Deion Branch answered each question with “sir” and “maam”.  He made a good first impression, but it’s going to be interesting to see how he fits into their defense.  Thanks to the legal system we’re still stuck in a lockout, so we’ll have to wait a bit before OTA’s and rookie minicamps start before we get to see what he can do on the field.

After Dowling came two runningbacks, with the Patriots first taking Shane Vereen out of California with the 24th pick in the second round, followed by Stevan Ridley out of LSU with the 9th selection of the third.

With just Danny Woodhead and BenJarvus Green-Ellis left as reliable options since Sammy Morris and Fred Taylor aren’t getting any younger, the two selections give them additional youth at a position they were in need of getting a little younger at.  Ridley is considered to be a bigger back with speed and strength, while Vereen is a bigger back and a guy who is also good at picking up the blitz.

Belichick said during his press conference that the two should compliment eachother well, and give them some options in the kicking game.

“I think that Vereen and Ridley obviously play the same position, but I think they are very different players,” said Belichick.  ”Both have been very productive in college, Ridley more so this past year, but even when he had an opportunity to play earlier in his career when they had other backs, they always kind of rotated the backs through there at LSU, that he’s been a very proactive guy both in the running game and in the passing game. He’s a bigger, physical back, good running style, gets a lot of tough yards.

“I’d say Vereen is a little bit more elusive, a little bit more of a space back, has good hands. I think both of those players can help us in the kicking game and they both have been productive at high levels of competition. I think they will complement each other well. We’ve had a little bit of age at that position, so this gives us a couple of young guys that will provide competition for the players that we have in that position.”

Finally to end Day 2 New England selected quarterback Ryan Mallet out of Arkansas, who apparently could be the guy that could eventually take over for Tom Brady whenever he decides he’s done playing football.  Belichick told reporters that one of the main reasons he selected Mallet is because he’s a guy who knows how to win, which is an attribute he talked about after selecting Brady back in 2000.  Despite some character issues which included a public intoxication arrest back in 2009, Belichick said after talking with him they were comfortable enough with him to decide to bring him to New England.

“We just felt like he was a good player,” said Belichick. “He’s had a lot of production. He’s won everywhere he’s been: high school, college. He did a good job at Michigan.  They came in and changed offenses and that was definitely beyond his control. I think he’s been a successful, productive quarterback all the way through his career: high school, college. He’s an impressive guy to talk to.”

When asked by one of the reporters about Mallet’s potential character issues, Belichick quickly rebuffed it.

“Obviously we’re comfortable with him; we took him.”

For an interesting 17,000 word take on him, here’s a link to an article that ran in the Florida Sun-Sentinal that talks about his career, as well as some of the off-field issues he had in college.

Rounds 4-7 will take place later today, and we’ll have a complete wrap-up later on.

VIDEO: Nate Solder Highlights

After selecting Nate Solder Thursday night out of Colorado, it appears that the Patriots will use him as the first piece of the puzzle in trying to rebuild an offensive line that lost right guard Stephen Neal to retirement, and also faces uncertainty on the left side with Matt Light and Logan Mankins. Mankins had the franchise tag placed on him, but it remains to be seen what direction those negotiations will take, and Light’s a free agent. Belichick said they plan on working him in at left tackle, so he’s clearly going to get an opportunity to play this season.

For any fans who want to take a look at the newest member of the Patriots, here’s a video that includes highlights of Solder as a member of the Buffaloes in Colorado:

Solder Pick Not a ‘Sexy’ One – But Necessary

Another day one draft, another round of collective groans.

It’s business as usual for Bill Belichick and the Patriots on draft day.

While last year the plan in round one was to select a guy in Devin McCourty to bring some stability to their secondary, this year it’s pretty clear that Thursday night’s selection of offensive tackle Nate Solder was Belichick’s first step in trying to fix what’s gone wrong during the postseason in recent years.

While some will argue that one of the biggest problems in recent years continues to be their pass rush, a bigger problem has actually been the fact that during the last two playoff games we’ve seen, teams have had their own defensive success putting pressure on Tom Brady.

Needless to say heading into Thursday night’s first round, on the Patriots draft board was apparently someone they thought would address that problem, and by the end of the night Solder became the newest member of the Patriots.

According to Solder, offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia made the trip out to Colorado on Monday to meet with him, and the Patriots had some additional familiarity with him due to Moses Cabrera, who New England hired back in March as their strength and conditioning coach.  Cabrera held the same position out in Colorado and had worked with Solder, and one of the biggest things talked about so far is his work ethic.  As we know, that’s one of the biggest things that Bill Belichick looks for, and according to Belichick they had been looking at him for a while last night before making the decision to take him.

“Nate [Solder] was a player that we’ve been on for a long time,” said Belichick last night after taking him with the #17 overall pick.  ”Of course we hired Moses [Cabrera] who was at Colorado last year, so he certainly gave us a little insight into him.

“Nate has been a solid player for Colorado, [a] left tackle and certainly there are a lot of things that he’ll need to do to improve, but I feel like he’s a good, talented guy, a hard-working kid, and if he can keep doing that, then I think he’ll be able to contribute for us and we’ll work him at left tackle.”

Matt Light is currently a free agent, and it’s unclear whether or not they’ll re-sign him before this season.  He’s been protecting Brady’s blindside for the duration of Brady’s career, but one of the biggest areas they’ve struggled with is dealing with “speed rushers”, who have given him fits in recent years.  Solder’s 6’8″ 319 lbs, and was the 2nd best tackle on most draft boards.  However, one big thing scouts have touted about him is his quickness.  He’s a former tight end and is extremely athletic, and was the AP Big 12 Player of the year for 2010.

Belichick said the transition wasn’t all that uncommon. Solder has certainly made the most of it, and was one of 10 unanimous first-team picks for the Big 12.

“I think you can definitely see Nate’s athleticism. I don’t think that’s that unusual,” said Belichick.  ”I think there are a lot of tackles – not a lot, but there are certainly a number of tackles who started off at tight end and kind of grew into the position.”

“Certainly when you watch him play, you watch him pull, you watch him run, you watch his athleticism, for a big guy, he moves well. He’s pretty light on his feet, and I think you see that all the way through.”

His resume backs it up.  During three seasons in Colorado, he allowed just five sacks and 21 pressures in 1,400 career passing plays.  When the biggest part of your franchise is the guy delivering the football, it’s important to make an investment in keeping him upright.   With the uncertainty with Light, coupled in with Logan Mankins’ contentious contract situation, and the retirement of Stephen Neal, three out of the five guys who have been responsible for keeping him safe are already potentially out of the picture.

When asked in an interview on 98.5 The Sports Hub last night what he thought about potentially battling for a spot to start, Solder said that the competition should bring out the best in everyone.

“I think it’s going to be a competition, and that process will make us all better,” said Solder on ‘The DA Show’ Thursday night.

The Patriots traded out of the 28th slot, sending the pick to New Orleans for a first round pick next year and an additional pick during this year’s second round.  What they do now remains to be seen, and it’s possible we could see them make another move today.  They’ve got the #33 overall pick, which Belichick said they’ve already heard from a couple of teams in that selection.  They’ll also pick at #56 and #60 in that round, so fans will have to wait and see what need they’ll address next.

For now they came away with a hard working guy who is a leader and a former team captain, which is the type of guy who fits the Patriots mentality. Solder was giddy throughout each interview Thursday night, and he’s looking forward to the opportunity of joining Brady and the rest of his teammates here in Foxboro.

Said Solder, “You know, I think Tom Brady is a great quarterback and I think all my teammates are great players and I’m looking forward to the privilege of playing for the Patriots.”

All together now, “GRONK, GRONK, GRONK!”

VIDEO: Remembering Last Year’s McCourty Pick

Last year the Patriots selected Devin McCourty in the first round, who went on to finish tied for second in the NFL in interceptions with seven, and was definitely a huge contributor here in New England. He even showed his toughness, missing only a handful of snaps despite playing with what fans later learned was a broken rib at the end of last season.

As we found out they made a great decision in drafting him, despite the obvious lackluster response you see in the video of the moment it was announced they took him:

Needless to say keep that in mind when you find out who they take tonight, because you never know if they’ll end up being yet another great addition to this football team.

Will the Patriots Trade Up Tonight?

If you’ve followed the Patriots in recent years, you’re no stranger to a little excitement on draft night.

You’ve seen New England trade up, trade down, trade out, and just trade picks away for future drafts.   Trying to keep up with it is generally pretty tough.  There’s usually quite a bit of research and digging that has to happen just to make sense of what they did or didn’t get, and just when you think you’ve figured out, they’ll make another one.

Will the Patriots go after Robert Quinn to line-up next to Vince Wilfork this season? (FILE:Icon/SMI)

It’s mind-boggling to say the least, but it’s hard to argue the logic in their draft strategy when they end up grabbing guys like Devin McCourty, Aaron Hernandez, Rob Gronkowski, along with Zoltan Mesko like they did last year.  Those are just a few of the guys they took during last year’s draft, and to end up with that many starters is about all you can ask for.

Now here we are heading into tonight’s draft where the Patriots have plenty of currency to maneuver wherever they wish, and that’s currently one of the biggest questions many of us are wondering about.  Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe reported that the Patriots may be eyeing Robert Quinn, and cited a league source who suggested they’ve discussed with Cleveland the possibility of trading up to the #6 spot in order to select him.

Obviously at this point it’s tough to predict what they’re going to do.  Ask Bill Belichick about it, and he’ll probably dismiss it with, “there’s a lot of talk about different situations on draft day.”  The Patriots are always ones who spend the day doing a lot of talking, and the odds of them making some sort of draft day deal seems to be about the only guarantee you can count on.  However, good luck figuring out what they’re doing to do beforehand.

We’ve seen first round maneuvers before where they’ve moved up to grab a guy if they feel he’s worth it.   In 2003, they traded up for Ty Warren. In 2002, they traded up for Daniel Graham.  But moving up into the top 10 is something we haven’t seen, and it would certainly be a surprise.

Granted them moving up is far more rare than them moving in the other direction and stockpiling picks for the future.  Last year fans watched them move back twice to grab Devin McCourty,  with most questioning the move and not exactly being thrilled with the selection.  McCourty went on to become a starter and even made the Pro Bowl, so it just goes to show you how hard it is to make any judgements on draft day.

Whether or not they decide to move up and take Quinn remains to be seen.  They built a solid defense around Richard Seymour and later added Vince Wilfork and Ty Warren.  So for them to consider Quinn - who Mel Kiper has as the 7th  ranked player in the draft - to be a guy to compliment Wilfork up front and a guy to build their defense around, it’s hard to say.  But as everyone knows, it’s all about value and the return on the selection that Belichck bases his decision around.

We’ll find out in a few hours whether or not we’ll see them make a move to grab him.  Other reports say that should Quinn fall out of the top 10, that could be the time the Patriots make a move for him.  So it probably won’t be the last we hear on this topic.

But one thing is certain, we’ll see a trade or two in the coming days when they hopefully come away with a group as talented as last year.  They’ll also probably make sure they’re well stocked to do it all over again next year.  That’s just the way it works, and tonight is certainly one we’ve been waiting on for a while since free agency has been placed on hold thanks to the lockout.

Needless to say it should be an interesting night, and we’ll have coverage throughout the evening, so be sure and check back for updates.

Welker Making the Most of Lockout

He may not be in Foxboro working out with his teammates during the current NFL Lockout, but Patriots receiver Wes Welker is making the most of the time away in hopes of playing later this year should the labor situation get worked out.

The Associated Press reported on Saturday that he spent today with about 180 kids who attended the free football camp he holds every year in Oklahoma City.

According to the report Welker tossed a few passes to the participants, along with working with them during receiving drills as well as lining up on defense against them during the 3 1/2-hour camp at Douglass High School.

“You’ve got to get into it a little bit,” Welker said. “I get bored easily. So, for me, I’ve got to get active and D one of these kids up or catch a pass for ‘em, throw to ‘em or whatever.

“We have fun with it.”

Patriots To Open 2011 In Miami, Play Jets in Week 5

Opening night against the Dolphins…it’s been a long time since a game against Miami meant this much.  However, the Patriots will look to rebound from a frustrating playoff loss against the Jets by starting the 2011 season off against their other AFC Rival - Miami.

Provided the season starts on time, Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reported on Tuesday night that the Patriots will open the season at Miami for a Monday night match-up on September 12th.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets will visit New England in week five, which comes as New York’s third straight road game (they reportedly play out in Oakland, followed by at Baltimore before visiting Foxboro).

According to Mike Reiss the team announced that three of its first four games will be on the road.

Rapoport also reports the team will host a game at home on Christmas Eve.

The schedule is set to be announced later this evening, and we’ll have more as it becomes available.
