The New England Patriots have added yet another tight end to their offense, signing veteran Visanthe Shiancoe to a one-year contract Tuesday afternoon.
Shiancoe joins an already strong tight end position with Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Daniel Fells, Jake Ballard and rookie Tyler Urban.
The contract, first reported by Yahoo! sports writer Jason Cole on Twitter, is reportedly worth 1.2 million according to NFL Network and NFL.com.
The nine-year NFL veteran caught 36 passes for 409 yards with the Minnesota Vikings last season. While his low production was most likely a combination of age and an overall poor Vikings team with an inexperienced quarterback, Shiancoe has proved to be a reliable target during his NFL career.
I expect Shiancoe to compete for playing time behind Gronkowski and Hernandez as he will battle with Daniel Fells for the third tight end position throughout training camp.
