Boston Sits on Top of the Sports World

"Boston sits on top of the sports world."

October 21, 2004

The 80's are back in a big way, from hairstyles, to fashion, to band reunions from Motley Crue to Duran Duran. Now there is one more 80's revival that has been brought back in Boston...

Beantown is back!

Back on top of the sports world, and there hasn't been a time like this since the Red Sox went to the World Series in 1986 against the NY Mets, the Patriots went to the Super Bowl in 1985 against the Chicago Bears, while the Celtics took three NBA titles in the 80's; 1981 over the Houston Rockets, 1984 over the LA Lakers and again over the Houston Rockets in 1986, they also had two title losses to the Lakers in 1985 and 1987. As for the Bruins they spent most of the 80's in the Adams Division playoffs, and  fell shy of the Stanley Cup losing in 1988 to the Edmonton Oilers.

Now it's 2004, the Patriots are two time Super Bowl champions and haven't lost a game in over a year with 20 wins in a row. Last night the Red Sox got two of the three monkeys off their backs by reversing the curse and knocking the Yankees out of the ALCS in historic fashion sending Red Sox fans to the streets in celebration. A celebration that did get out of hand at times with several cars & trucks getting flipped over, some small fires started, windows being smashed, people dancing on roofs of MBTA buses, and while FOX 25 broadcasted a live feed from Kenmore Square a fight broke out between two young women duking it out in the street like some PPV fight, then a boyfriend, brother or whatever joined in and began kicking one of the young women as she was getting the squat beat out of her. Boston Police claim only eight arrests were made, but if this is the shades of things to come then security will have to be beefed up for the World Series.

This afternoon, calm was restored as fans camped outside of Fenway to purchase tickets and for the next two days Boston will sit in the calm eye of an impending sports media storm. This weekend the nation's eyes will be focused on Boston for the entire weekend beginning Saturday night with game one of the World Series at Fenway Park, and who will the Sox face?

That will be decided tonight as the Houston Astros square off in a game seven confrontation against the St. Louis Cardinals. Either victor will bring plenty of drama to the Boston area as the Red Sox lost to the St Louis Cardinals in the 1946 World Series, but to me I think seeing a Houston Astros match-up would butter my muffin (pffft... Mari). Just the thought of Roger Clemens and Jeff Bagwell returning home to spoil our chances make it more suspenseful.

Sunday is like a one-two knockout punch as the undefeated New York Jets come to Gillette to face the undefeated New England Patriots. This year the Jets have a healthy QB Chad Pennington, while RB Curtis Martin's ankles are doing just fine this season amassing over 600 yards of real estate in the past 5 weeks. Some people like me realize that the Jets haven't beat anybody over .500 this year, but they could still be a dangerous team and I'm sure Belichick will have the troops ready come game time at 4pm so they won't fall victim to the "trap".

The Pats game should end between 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm giving some diehard sports fanatics plenty of time to zip down route 1 and up route 93 into Boston where they may be able to get a scalper to sell them a ticket for about $500 to $1000. If they can't get into Fenway then they may just pull up a stool next door in the Cask and Flagon, and down their poison watching the game on television while being able to hear the fans and announcers from the stadium about 15 yards away.

So needless to say this writer's weekend is on lock as I will be at the "Razor" watching the Jets/Pats battle first hand, and then that night I will be heading home to catch the game in all of it's high def glory on the big screen unless some wants to sell me some tickets at face value...

Anybody? Anyone?

If I get desperate I may just head in to town, I'll be the guy on the corner of Yawkey Way with a sign around his neck reading

"Needs one, just one... Only one! Will write for tickets..."
